TO BE DISCONTINUED
PORT’S SECONDARY DEPARTMENT LOW ATTENDANCE AT HIGH SCHOOL. From the end of this year, the secondary department of the Port Chalmers District High School will be discontinued. Word to this effect has been received by tho Otago Education Board from the Minister of Education (Hon H. Atmore), This course was recommended by the Council of Education, and the matter was hold in abeyance by the late Minister so that tue possible attendance next year could be ascertained. The inquiries showed that the attendance would be only from twelve to fifteen, and this number has apparently been considered too small to warrant the’ continuance of secondary teaching at the school. Pupils of the school who wish to continue their education will have to attend Dunedin: secondary schools next year, but they will not he deprived of their right to three years’ education, earned by obtaining a junior free place. They will also be entitled to free school railway tickets. The recommendation of the Council of Education was discussed in May last by the Education Board, which decided, at the request of the Port Chalmers School Committee, to ask the Minister of Education to hold over his decision until the end of the year. .It was reported at the tune that forfcyeightvpupils at the Otago High. Schools came from Port Chalmers, and, that eleven came from beyond Port Chalmers. In addition, a number of children attended the King Edward Technical Collegi. Miaa ‘ Agnes Sinclair, who has been secondary assistant at Port Chalmers for the past eighteen years, has been appointed fourth assistant in the primary department of the school.
