TRINITY METHODIST CAROL SERVICE
’The custom of holding carol services just before Christmas is one that is honoured each year by quite a number of the city and suburban church choirs. It may not bo generally known that the Trinity Methodist Church Choir was the first choir ,in Dunedin to hold a special carol service, and lias annually prepared and given a programme of old English carols, Christmas anthems, solos, and choruses. The programme given last Sunday evening at the close of the usual service would rank among the best, a choir of nearly forty voices rendering such old favourites as ‘ The First Nowell,’ 1 Good King Wenceslas,’ ‘Listen Lording,’ in such a manner as to impart a tru eChristinas atmosphere. Fully harmonised versions of Gounod’s ‘ Nazareth ’ and ‘ Lift Up Your Heads ’ from ‘The Messiah,’ were other choir items. In ‘Hark, Hark! My Soul,’ Miss Rita Holmes and Miss Irene Horniblow very ably sang the solo parts, the choir supporting throughout. Miss Ruth Perry, m ‘He Shall Feed His Flock ’ (Handel), displayed her excellent voice to full advantage, as also did Miss Phyllis West in ‘ Sleep, Holy Babe’ (Dykes). Mr Arthur Lungley sang ‘The Star of Bethlehem,’ and with Master Jack Mutch took solo parts in ‘ Good King Wenceslas. ’ Air W. Harrison gave an acceptable rendering of ‘Tbe Hush of Night Hath Fallen’ (Spence); Miss Anita Winkcl contributing a seasonal recital of “ Peace on earth, goodwill to men.” Miss Evelyn Shephard, Miss Woods, and Miss Minnie Henderson, members of the choir, also assisted with solo work during the evening, while at the ordinary service Miss Freda Elmes sang. Miss E. Hartley, at the organ, and Mr S. Lawn, at the conductor’s stand, have every reason to be pleased with the carol service of 1928. ,
