BRITISH LEVIATHAN. Lord Kyisant, chairman of tho White Star Company, has made the interesting disclosure that the company’s new 60,000-ton ship, tho largest in the world, which is being built at Belfast, is to be driven electrically. This system of propulsion has given excellent results in previous vessels, both naval and mercantile (writes the shipping correspondent of the ‘ Daily Telegraph’), but its adoption for such a gigantic snip as the new White Star liner is an event of outstanding significance. Some doubt still exists as to whether the electricity for the propelling motors will bo generally by skam turbines or Diesel engines, but the chances are in favour of tho former. Tho largest vessels now fitted with the turbo-electric drive arc the United States naval aircraft carriers Lexington and Saratoga, displacing 33,000 tons. In each case the machinery develops 180,000 h.p., the designed speed being 34i knots, in spite of defects in the turbine blading their performances have been very satisfactory. It may be said, therefore, that tho electric drive has emerged from tho trial stage, and in selecting this system for. their mammoth liner the White Star directors are by no means embarking upon a hazardous experiment. Up to the present the largest merchant vessel to be equipped for electric propulsion is the R. and O. mail steamer Viceroy of India, which was launched on the Clyde on September 15 last, her gross tonnage being over 19,000. She is to be driven at a speed of nineteen knots by twin electrical motors of 18,000 h.p., taking current from turbo-electric generators operated by high pressure steam from oil-burning boilers. As to the sliced of • the new White Star leviathan, various reports are circulating. It is probable that she will be at least as fast as the North German Llovd twins Bremen and Europn, which have a nominal speed of 2GJ knots, but are expected to make 27 knots at sea. Many advantages arc claimed on behalf of the electric drive. Among them are reduced fuel consumption for a given output of power, facility of control when going astern, absence of noise and vibration, diminution of heat from engine room—an important factor in regulating venilation in the passengers’ quarters—and lower maintenance charges. Further, the system permits of a more extensive subdivision of the machinery spaces, thus adding to the safety of the ship. VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL.
