LABOURER’S BANKRUPTCY

CAUSED BY UNEMPLOYMENT A meeting of creditors in the estate of William Gray Grigg, a labourer, was held yesterday afternoon, the Official Assignee (Mr J. M. Adam) presiding. In his signed statement, bankrupt said ho was married, with three children, aged six, four, and two years. For seven years (up to March 28 last), he was employed on the railways, his wages during teat time being £3 19s 6d a week net. He had resigned from the railway with the intention of getting a farm, but the project fell through, and he was out of work for several months.

The only secured creditor was the Citizens Loan and Discount Company, Ltd., the amount owing being £23, tho estimated value of the security being £SO.

The amount owing to unsecured creditors totalled £165 4s 7d, the principal creditors being F. J. Townsend, £ll 10s; Mrs E. Foote, £l4; A. E. Tillyshort, £l6. 2s 6d; Dunedin City Corporation (Gas Department), £ll Is sd; L. Dickie, £25. There were altogeth forty-eight unsecured creditors. The Official Assignee explained that the surplus from the secured debt was £27, but, as that comprised furniture, there was nothing in the estate for creditors.

Examined, bankrupt said that the sum of £B4, received from the railway superannuation fund, had been expended, on the payment of 'cbts and living expenses. He had no prospects of paying amounts owing. He regretted having left the railway service.

Mr Adam said nothing could bo done as there was no quorum present. The meeting was adjourned sine die.
