BALCLUTHA, November 26. The surprise in South Otago cache circles on Saturday was the defeat o the hitherto unbeaten Freezer team Waiwcra by 199 runs to .51 runs. The Balclutha Bowling Club sent live rinks to Kaitangata on Saturday, and sustained a rather severe delcat, every rink being down. The green was perfect, and was too fast for the visitors. South Otago Fire Brigades.--At Kaitangata. on Saturday the annual competitions for the Watts Cup wore held on tho Recreation Ground in the presence of a goodly crowd. Tho competing brigades were Lawrence, Balclutha, Milton, and Kaitangata, and keen competition took place in each event. Lawrence 'Brigade managed to win the cup, defeating last year’s winners (Balclutha) by one point. _ Lawrence won the five-men event, which counts most, while Balclutha won the three-men and two-men events. fn the evening a social function was held. Entries for the show to bo held this week closed on Friday night, the total being 841, compared with 818 last year. The sheep sections show a considerable increase, particularly in eross-breds. The cattle entries are fewer, while tho butter and baking sections are larger. The draught horse section shows a big drop on last year, but this is more than compensated for in the light horse section, which shows a big increase. Indications are that tho show will be a pronounced success, all that is now required to assure this being fine weather. The first annual meeting of tho. resuscitated Cl nth a Caledonian Society was hold on Saturday night, Air F. M'Guinness presiding over a good attendance. Aleck, a Tahakopa busltman, £33 for poaching opossums, and £lO tor shooting native pigeons. ’This was the defendant's second offence, ho having been fined £2O some months ago. The Acclimatisation. Society’s ranger discovered Aleck’s camp some miles in the bush and waited for his return, when he was naught with fourteen skins while tho pigeons were on the fire cooking for his tea. Two other men, Grey and Andrews, ,werc fined £3 each, with costs, the former for taking an opossum out of season, and the latter for assisting in tho offence.

Tho Balclutha Municipal- Baths were opened for tho first time this season on Saturday, and wore largely patronised by young and old, the weather enticing many into the water. The baths are very'popular during the summer months, and are also proving beneficial to tho school children, the_ majority of whom have learned to swim during the last two years.
