BURKES-ST. LEONARDS CLUB

11l perfect weather, the official opening of the Burkes-St. Leonards Aquatic Club took placo at St. Leonards on Saturday afternoon. The opening ceremony was held in the King George’s Hall, where afternoon tea was served. The Commodore, Mr W. «J. Bardsley, welcomed the visitors to the openjn°\ which in reality was the initial opening (the club being formed as the outcome of the splendid regatta held last February!. He was pleased to see present Air J. W. Munro, M.P., Mr H. E. Mollcr (chairman of the Otago Harbour Board), and_ representatives of sister clubs and kindred associations. The commodore also wished to express his warm appreciation of the secretary, Mr Charles J. Hayward, and tlie members of the executive. Next February the club, in conjunction with the Progressive League, would hold a grand carnival and regatta, ho announced.. . The following then extended tliCJiv felicitations to the new dub:--Mr J. T. Paul (president Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association), Mr <)- W. Munro, M.P.. Mr H. E. Holier (chairman Otago Harbour Board!, Mr .Thorn (rcar-commodoro Port Chalmers Boating Club), Mr E. V, Fairbaxrn (president Otago Bowing Association), Mr P. J. Priest (president Otago Swimming Association), Mr Gibson (commodore North-cast Harbour Boating Club), Cr Harndge (West Harbour Borough Council), Mr Webber (commodore Eavensbourne Boating Club), Mr Scott (Broad Bay Boating Club). Fo’lowing the speeches, the commodore, before declaring the season open, invited all to an outing on the harbour. The season was them declared open. The following launches, each with a full load of passengers, _ made an impressive sight in procession: — Venture, Pakeha, Eclipse, •' Islay, Marie, Myrtle, Tui, Sylvia Ngaio, Marata. The yachts Eileen, Kia Ora, Minnow, May, Frolic, and _ Agnes looked particularly well following the launches. The West Harbour Brass Band, under the condnctorship of Mr C. Davie, supplied the musical programme.
