SANDERS CUP TRIALS

EILEEN WIKS AGAIN , The second < Sanders Cup challenge): trial was held on the Upper Harbour’ on Saturday afternoon in a smart sailing breeze from tho north-east. Last year’s Otago representative, Eileen, won from Kia Ora by a good margin, her skipper (G, Kellertt) showing the greater judgment. When the start was made at 3.12, Kia, Ora and Eileen crossed together, with .Heather about 4sec later.. On the beat, Eileen was to weather,: and she worked the wind closer than Kia Ora, Eileen was first off the starboard tack, and Heather followed.. Kia Ora continued closer into tho cement works. On the, beat across harbour stewards Waverley, Heather fell off the wind, while Eileen sailed much bettor than Kia Ora. Eileen was first round the castle beacon, 47sec ahead of Kia Ora, with Heather a minute later.

The setting of spinnakers was not done briskly on any of the boats for the run down to the buoy off the Anderson’s Bay inlet. Eileen was fastest on this piece of work. She rounded 70seo ahead of Kia Ora, while Heather was round 43scc later.

It was a lead across to tho pilo off the steamer basin, and then the boats came on to the wind again to thresh down past the starting line. Kia Ora stood close into tke Victoria Wharf, while Kellott worked tho channel with short tacks. Tho move gave Kia Ora a lift up, and when they commenced the second round, Kia Ora w\s to weather of Eileen and sailing every bit as fast. With Eileen under his lee, Kia Ora’s skipper should have kojit her there, but ho erred in allowing Eileen to break tack and stand across tho harbour. Kia Ora continued on the starboard leg, and ouco on the thresh to the beacon, she had no chance of again getting to windward of Eileen. The beacon was rounded by Eileen in Imin Isec ahead of Kia Ora, while Heather turned oil' tho wind 2min 26sec later. On the run down to tho inlet, Heather had trouble with her spinnaker. Eileen showed greater speed, and fetched tho buoy Imm 7sec ahead of Kia Ora. Heather followed smin lOsee after.

The positions were unchanged on the load and beat to the finishing line, tho finishing times being;— Eileen, 4h 7min 30sec. Kia Ora, 4h 9min 4sec. Heather, 4h 14min 52scc. The third trial race will be sailed next Saturday.
