The possibilities of complete standardisation of Diesel machinery become more and more remote, for what are practically two new types of engine have been placed on Dm market m the past mouth or two; but Dm standardisation of Dm individual engines built by tho dilferent manufacturers is proceeding apace. An analysis was recently made of about a dozen or fifteen engines of a wellknown two-cycle type under construction at,one works, and it was found that, although varying in power from about 2,500 b.h.p. to 5,000 b.li.p., they were all built up of similar cylinders. It was effected by having engines with five, six, eight, ten, and eleven cylinders respectively, and, needless to say, this policy enabled a vast amount of tho remaining portions of Dm engines to bo standardised. An investigation of the engines passing through a works building four-cycle motors showed that there were sixteen similar sets comprising 100 standard cylinders of equal dimensions, the engines being six, seven, and eight cylinder units.
