'CARMEN'
Great interest is being evinced in the Choral Society’s performance of tho concert version of Bizet s Carmen, which is to be given in His Majesty s Theatre on Tuesday evening next. Although Bizet produced many works prior to the composition of ‘ Carmen, he was little known until ‘ Carmen was produced at the Opera Corniquo on March 3, 1575, and it was really only after the opera had been produced at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Rondon m June, IS7B. that Bizet really becamefamous* Sine© Lhou * Carmen uas been performed in every part ot the civilised world, aud it is within tne mark to say that to-day ‘Carmen’ is one of tho most popular operas which anv opera company can produce. The Dunedin Choral Society has entered into the rehearsal of the concert version of this popular opera with zest and enthusiasm. It will be a pleasure to many musical people in Dunedin to hear Miss Helen Gard’ner again. Hei voice has now matured, aud her work as soprano soloist should be marked by finish and understanding. Miss Mina Caldow has already achieved distinction in the part of Carmen, and her established New Zealand reputation should he confirmed on Tuesday evening. Mr Harrison, the tenor soloist, and Mr Howard Foster, bass, have both ample opportunities to display their vocal technique. Tho box plan arrangements are advertised.
