SHAKESPEARE CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of tho Dunedin Shakespeare Club was held in the chib’s room on Saturday last. Mr J. C. Stephens was in tho chair, and there was a good attendance of members. The committee, in submitting its report on the work of the club during its lifty-first season, stated that- tho public readings given during the year were ‘Hamlet,’ ‘The Winter’s Tale, and ‘ The Merry Wives of Windsor,’ ami on each occasion the audience was and appreciative. In addition, the 3 club had held its ordinary weekly meetings, of which- ten under , tho charge of Mr S. 11. Osborn were; devoted to tho study of ‘ Hamlet,eight under the charge of Mr J. Fleming to ‘ Tho Winter’s Tale,’ and twelve- under tho charge of Mr H. Chapman to ‘ The Merry Wives of Windsor.’ The membership of the club was as follows: One hundred and eighty-eight honorary members and sixty-seven active members. Tin's constituted a decrease of eight in tlio honorary and an increase of one in the active list, as compared with last year. From the financial statement it was noted that the club was in a sound financial position, Tho club was much indebted to blisses E ,Sumner, Agnes Guy, and 'Helen Gard’ner for their vocal items at the ■public readings. During tho year the club gave a special reading to celebrate the jubilee of the club, The pio-.-rranme consisted of miscellaneous scenes. The casts were chosen cbielly from older members of tho club. Before the commencement of tho reading the president, Mr J. C. Stephens gave an interesting resume ol the club s history, paying fitting tribute to the founders anil former leaders of the club. The committee wished to impress on active members the need of more regular attendance at and greater interest in the weekly meetings, so that tho club might bo able to carry on tho good work it had done lor the past fifty years. ‘ .. ~ The chairman moved the adoption ol tho report and balance-sheet.—J Ins was seconded by Mr S. Stephens it was decided that the club bo registered under tho Unclassified Societies C \ vote of thanks was accorded to Mr C. J. L. White fur drawing up the rules of the dull, and to Mr J. C.
