Mr F. Waite, M.P., arrived from tho south by this morning’s express, Mr L. Deans Ritchie returned from Invercargill by the through train today. Mr J. A. Johnston, president,of tin* Dunedin Amalcur Cycling Club, left for Christchurch to-day, Ho will be present at tha Ashburton-Cliristchurch cycle road race on Saturday. Mr G. S. Thomson travelled to Christchurch by tho through express today. Mr 11. 11. Xcilson went to Wellington this morning. Messrs H. C. Campbell, E. A. Ilosevear, and A. H. Allan travelled to Wellington this morning to attend tho annual conference of the associated chambers of commerce. A Press Association message from Christchurch states that. Mr John Crawford, aged seventy-four, a linotype operator in the ‘ Press ’ office, fell from bis chair while at his macliino last night and died half an hour later. Dr Crawshaw attended tho dying man, but attempts to restore him failed. Mr Crawford joined tho service of tho ‘Press’ in IS7S, and would have completed fifty years of night work if ho had lived till February next.
Tho Profossoi ial Board of Canterbury College last night decided to nominate ter selection as a Rhodes scholar Mr Philip Leonard Matthew Soljak. Mr Soljalr, who is twenty-ono years of age, attended the Tauranga District High School and the Marist Brothers’ Schot.ol at Auckland. In 1921 ho entered the Sacred Heart Colleee, Auckland, with a scholarship. Ho was dux of the school in 1924 and 1925, in the latter year winning a junior university scholarship. Entering Canterbury College in 192(5, ho was awarded the Robert Bell Scholarship in journalism. At college ho was a member of the Dramatis Society, and gained second place in tho Dialectic Society's competitions in 3920. 'Ho played in tho focoml grade football team in 1020 and 1927. Ho. was run-ner-up in the college swimming championship. . ~ T ", At its meeting yesterday the Dunedin Methodist Central Mission agreed unanimously to invite the Rev. u. .». Hinton, of Takapuna Church, Auckland, to assume the supcrlntendeajy of the mission next year, in succession to tho Rev. W. Walker, who lias accepted a call to Pitt Street Cornell, Auckland. Prior to • taking over Ins. new charge tho Rev. Mr Walker will, during the month of January and February, go on leave, and. tho inission has extended an invitation to tho Rev. J.
