BRITISH SYRIAN MISSION

VALEDICTORY SERVICE A well-attended valedictory sendee was held in St. Andrew's Church on Monday evening, the 6th inst., in view of the departure of Miss Lilian Jeffreys, 8.A., for Syria, where she will bo stationed in” tho Training College at Beyrut, the headquarters of the British Syrian Mission. On tho platform were the Rev. E. J. Tipler (who represented St. Andrew’s Church') and the Rev. T. A. Pybus, W. A. Ilamblett. and Mr L. Cook, on behalf of the mission. Miss Jeffreys, hon. secretary of tho R.S.M., was present with her niece, tho outgoing missionary. Following the opening exercises Mr Cook gave a, short Bible reading based on the words “Look, pray, give, uml go ” as indicating tho national sequence leading to the recognition of tho commission of Christ, wherein was clearly indicated not only His proclamation, hut His power and His promised presence to those who sought to do His will. The Rev. W. A. Hamblett dieu gave an inspiring address, and dwelt on the words “ Abide in Me and let Me : bitlo in you ” as tlic source of blessing imd fruitfulness, and as being an ahs-'ia'.ely necessary addition to a pleasant personality for effective witness amnimst llio.se with whom the young missionary would bo associated. The Rev. E. ,!. Tipler gave tho charge to the. departing sister, she being a member of St. Andrew's Church, and in tho course of a very appropriate address referred to Miss Jeftroyda services in tho Sunday school lor uioro than eight years. The Rev'. T. A. Pybus (chairman of the Mission Council) gave valuable information regarding tho British Syrian Mission, which was founded in 1860 by Mrs Bowen Thompson. Tho mission is interdenominational, and takes its stand on tho Bible as the inspired Word of God. Its field of operations extends from Tyre in tho south to the north of the Lebanon Range, and its object is the conversion to Christianity of Mohammedans. Druses, and others. The quarterly magazine is entitled ‘ The Daughters ol Syria.’ Miss L. Jeffreys then gave a mostinteresting address, during which she explained that comparatively recently sho had consecrated her life to the service of her Saviour, and narrated the steps she bad taken which led to her acceptance by. the Homo Council of the mission for service’ in the educational branch of the work in Beyrut. Following the tinal hymn the chairman closed the service by pronouncing the benediction.
