CAPITAL AND LABOUR

On Sunday evening in the Waratah Hall, Mr Sibley addressed a large audience on the subject of ‘ Capital and Labour.’ Ho said that it was not the spirit of co-operation that ho#i obtained In the conflict thus far, but rather it had been a spirit of co-ercion which came from both sides. Mr Sibley said ho did not plan to state the merits of any individual party, lint to point his hearers to what had boon foretold ol the struggle by tho prophets of old. After reading from the fourth and fifth chapters of James it was pointed out that in tho days_ before Christ would take up the reins of control, “ the last days,” there would be a heaping together of treasure, followed by tho crying out of tho labouring class. Tho speaker said that our generation had witnessed a remarkable heaping together of gold. In 1500 A.n. tho world’s gold stock was reckoned to bo about £75,000,000, which was hut part of one man’s fortune to-day. Millionaires had increased in our world an,d so had poverty. The treasure of the world was not equally distributed, but was, as the prophet had stated, “heaped together. There was something wrong with the world when one part was starving and another part living in luxury. Half the price of a battleship, built to destroy life, would have saved millions during tho great Russian famine. One of the modern necklaces, if turned into money, would save thousands of starving Chinese at the present time. Together with the increase of wealth we had witnessed a remarkable increase of violence in the form of robberies, and we had also seen some of our Christian lands on tho verge of revolution. A very serious menace to our civilisation was the hatred born of greed and lust. “ Strikes arc the canker of industry,” and the prophet found no use for them. His words were: “fitablish your hearts, for the coming of tho Lord draweth nigh.” Mr Sibley concluded his remarks by counselling moderation for both parties ond the getting together in the bonds of Christianity.
