Australia is a young country-in the artistic sense, but it lias already produced poets, painters, and musicians who have made their marie in the Old World. Two of the singers have won international fame—Dame Melba,- the great soprano, and Alfred O’Shea, the tenor, who is John M'Cormack’s only rival. M'Cormack as a concert singer was considered peerless, but another tenor of Irish parentage compels comparison. This young Jrish-Anstralian is a model of Italian voice production, but he has also that innate .Celtic appreciation of tone colouring. Beholds equal balance between the melody and the story, and the beautiful voice, belllike in the upper register, gives artistic expression. As Air O’Shea has to take a leading part in the world Eucharistic Congress in Sydney in September and subsequently fulfil extensive operatic and concert engagements in America, it may be many years before he comes this way again. Now he will coma in the fullness of his powers after great triumphs with the Melba-Williamson and Fuller Gonzales Opera Companies. The season will take place in His Majesty’s Theatre on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, August 1,3, and 4. The box plans will be opened on Friday, July, 27.
