[By St. Clair.]

After a break in the weather in the night of the second day's races it was beautifully fine and bright for the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club’s Winter Meeting, and the attendance must have nearly constituted a record. The course : was no heavier than it was on the previous day, and provided excellent -winter going. The totalisator again handled an increased turnover, the figures for the three days, as compared with last year, being:— 1925. 1927. First day £43,679J £12,5243 Second day 1)9,5427 39,053 Third day ... ... 68,978 C6,305£ Totals £157,300 £147,973 The racing was again interesting, but fatal to backers of first favourites, as not one of them succeeded. When Olympic won the Talavera Hack Hurdles ho returned one of the best dividends paid this season, and the <xllat racer was too last for the more experienced hurdlers. Tt was lucky for his connections that the West Coaster Erin-go-bragh hit a hurdle three *urlongs from home, the latter might have won. The heaviest backed atarter at the meeting was beaten when Consent wont down to Historic, who was in receipt of 51b and a year r rom the favourite. Gold Cure, who won the Maiden Handicap on Thursday, showed it was no lluke_ by boating a much better class field in the Croltou Handicap in. Corintlna again failed to stay on after being well placed at the turn for tho straight. After his two good performances on tho flab it was not surprising to find Nukumai sent out a solid favourite m tho Winter Hurdles, but those races evidently told their talc, and last year’s winner was either not able to keep near tho leaders or was kept too far back, and lie was unable to make up the leeway over the last half-mile. Beau Cavalier, who was a good second favourite, was taken to the front after landing over tho first hurdle, and "’as never afterwards headed._ Ho gave a good exhibition of fast jumping, and Henderson a very easy winning ndc. Red Fuchsia’s performance was a good one, but he found 161 b too much to give the Great Northern Hurdle race winner in the heavy going. He should turn tho tables on Beau Cavalier it they meet nt Ricciirtou next -nontli and the going us sound. Gaze was ridden a peculiar race, and covered more ground than any other starter. Ho finished well over the last half-mile, and is another horse that has shown ho can stay, and might do better on a firmer track. Taboo, who was made a good favourite after his two good showings at the meeting, was unable to see the mile out, and another south Islander in Fairy Herald, who after showing up badly in his two previous starts at the meeting, scored a very easy win. His victory was not nearly so surprising as the solid backing ihat came for him at the close of the bote tin*, hut evidently the races he had on 'Wednesday and Thursday worked a marked improvement on him. Brigadier Bill, wTio was made a strong order for the July Steeplechase, appeared to cover a lot of extra giound in the first two miles, but was still going well when he felt about five furlongs from home.. ls.awini, who has finished eight consecutive seconds in his last starts over country, broke the sequence bv beating Tnki by a short length, both horses giving a good exhibition of jumping. Tuki was overhauling Kawini in the run over the last furlong, and ran more generously than in the Wellington Steeplechase. Matu hit a fence'very hard three furlongs from home, otherwise ho would have probably beaten both of them. Duke Abbey scored well in tho Onslew Handicap, and Callanmore was uftich too good for Meadow Lark in the concluding event. The latter was not well suited with tho going, hut ran better than on tho second day.

After his good showing on Thursday I Quincoma was made three times _as | good favourite as Sir Moment in. too \ Talavera Hack Hurdles, with tlm -Westj Coaster, Erin-go-bragh, a good tliira i choice, and Lady Passenger and Star, Shell the best supported of the others. Erin-go-bragh at once took up the role ; of pace-maker, and led out or ; tno . straight From Waltzer, Good Sport,! Hymgreat,, Star Shell, and Quincoma, I the field being well spread-eagled, tno only change as they raced along .the i back was the improvement in. position , of Olympic (Pplydamon—Gay) and thedropping, back of tho favourite through-■ hitting hard tho hurdle near the sixfurlong post. Olympic raced, up to Erin-go-bragh across the top, and tue latter hit the hurdle near the threefurlong post. Olympic, who was the second' extreme outsider, led Brin-go- , bra oh and Lady Gay into the straight, 1 : and, well clear, at the last hurdle, he , ran home a good winner by two lengths from Lady Gay, another outsider, who boat Erin-go-bragh home from last fence. Ruby Ring, Red Bank, Lady Passenger, and Star Shell were next. Investments, £5,888• (£5,355 last year).

In the Novice Handicap Mark Mint was withdrawn, and Consent was sent out tho heaviest-hacked horse ot the meeting. Dancing Star, Tripos, and Tea Rose being the best backed al tno others. Dancing Star was the first to show out, and led Historic (Massau— Bray ton) and the favourite to tiie course proper. Tho latter was rn charge as they reached the course proper, but was in trouble at the distance post, where Historic challenged him, and in a good race to too post won by half a neck. Veronese was six lengths away third, and followed by Dancing Star and Tea Rose, who, was left a couple of lengths at the start. Investments, £6,796J (£6,894).

11l the Crofton Handicap Full Mark was withdrawn, and Pangolin was sent out a good favourite, carrying considerably more tickets than The Mug, who was slightly better backed than Marjoram, Gold Cure (Gold Soult—-M----gari) and Corinthia. Gold Cure was the first to break the line, and led Volplane, Grand National, and the favourite along the back. Going to the far turn the latter wont to the front, and was followed across the top by Volplane, Grand National, and Gold Cure. Volplane dropped out before reaching the home turn, where Grand National ran into second place, and was followed by Corinthia, Gold Cure, and Teri. At the distance post Corinthia was beaten, and Gold Cure and Teri headed Pangolin halfway to thq post, and Gold Cure easily beat Teri by a full length. Grand National struggled into third place in front of Maui, who looked dangerous at the distance post, Pangolin, King Mart, and Marjoram next. Investments, £8,425i (£7,576i). » * * » A good field of twelve started in the Winter Hurdles, and last year's winner (Nukumai) was sent out a ter favourite than Beau Cavalier (Chesterfield Finland marc), this pair being much hotter backed than Red Fuchsia, who was better hacked than Gaze, who appeared to bo a little soro when doing his preliminary; Aborfeldy, Mia Bella, and Patuki being the best backed of the others. The starters and riders were: —1 Nukumai (Bowden), Red Fuchsia (Alan M'Donald), 4 Gaze (A. E. Ellis), 2 Beau Cavalier (S. Henderson), 5 Aborfeldy (Tilson), C Mia Bella (Warner), 8 Nucleus (Alistor McDonald), 10 Kilburn (Jarvis), II Bracmau (Jenkins), 9 Kauri Park (Delieu), 7 Patuki (M'Brearty), and 12 Vexatious (Blanche). Racing to the first fence Nucleus was first, in front of Beau Cavalier, Kauri Park, and Aherfeldy. On lauding, the Grand Northern Hurdle winner was in front, and he led' along the back and across the top from Nucleus Kauri Park, Aherfeldy, Red Fuchsia, and Mia Bella, Nukumai being next to last. Passing-the stand Beau Cavalier was three lengths in front of Kauri Park, Nucleus, Aherfeldy, Red Fuchsia, and Mia Bella, with Nukumai last. After passing the mile post. Kauri Park got closer to Beau Cavalier, but was two lengths behind him at the hurdle near the six furlong post, where Rod Fuchsia moved up to Kauri Park. Mia Bella was next. Racing round the far turn and across the top, Beau Cavalier was three lengths in front of Red Fuchsia, Mia Bella, Kauri Park, and AberfoLriy. The latter fell two hurdles from homo, and Kilburn fell over him. Beau Cavalier led into the straight and was four lengths iin front of Red Fuchsia at the last fence, drawing out to win by six lengths. Gaze, who appeared to bo in trouble in tbo early stages of the race, was four lengths away third, followed by Kauri Park and Mai Bella, who were together in fourth place. Nukumai was sixth, and followed by Vexatious, Braeman, Nucleus, and Patuki, who jumped badly. Investments, £9,5891 (£9,0821).

All started in.the Winter Oats Handicap, tor which Taboo waa made a better favourite than Avro, each being botter backed than Day Guard and Fairy Herald (Clarenccaux —Fairy Benzie), who was not only neglected in the betting in his previous start, but also stopped badly after going four and a-half furlongs, and it was surprising to find such solid' support coming for tho Washdyke-trained horse. Kalos was the first to* show out from an excellent line, and was followed by Huikai and Day Guard. The latter led round the far turn, and racing across the top the order was Day Guard, Huikai, Queen Arch, Fairy Herald, and Taboo. Queen Arch was just in front of Day Guard at the homo turn, with Kalos and Fairy Herald next, with Taboo next. Tho latter was the first in trouble, ami at tho distance Fairy Herald ran up to Queen Arch, and then drew right away to win this race tho second year in succession very easily by five lengths from Kilmiss. Beaumont, Black Mint (who was last until turning for home), Huikai, nml Avro next. Investments, £9,327.1- (£9,029). " * * * Radiate was withdrawn from the July Steeplechase, for which Brigadier Bill was made a better favourite than Kavvini. with Matu and Tuki tho best hacked of the others in a good betting race. Kawiui and Tuki led over the first two fences; then Comical, who was inclined to run down his fences, took charge, and led Kawini and Tuki oyer the next mile and a-half. Brigadier Bill and Matu moved up to the field doing to tho sod wall, where Passim Through unseated his rioer. Kawini then took charge, and led the favourite to the next fence, where the latter fell. At the next fence Kawini, Tuki, and Matu were together, the latter lilting hard, and Kawini led Tuki and Matu Into tho straight. Kawini was well clear at the last foiice of Matu and Tuki, and ii. the run home just lasted long enough to bead the Dunedin horse by a short length, with Matu a length away third. Passin’ Through was twenty lengths awav next. Investments, £7.233 (£7,4795. Taboo and Monoahan were withdrawn from the Onslow Handicap, and in very spirited betting King Lu was sent out a few pounds better favourite than Duke Abbey (Quin Abbey—Kuiatn), the pah being much better backed than Catkin Cbelone, and Ovation, who _wern even! backed. Ovation, Ronald, Chelomand Duke Abbey were out in front am on terms to the turn into tho straight, where Ovation dropped out, and, after passing the false rail Cbelone was just, in front of Ronald, Duke Abbey, and King Lu. Ronald dropped out before reaching the distance post, and Cbelone looked all over a winner a hundred yards from home, but Duke Abbey | stuck to his task, and, getting his nose in front 20yds from the post, beat Che-

I lone by a bead. King Lu was three l lengths away third, followed by Catkin, j Kilperon, and Rouaki. The winner i gave Roy Reed his first win at the i meeting, and placed him on even terms with T. Green again in the jockey pre- ‘ rniership. Investments, £9,517$ : t£3,812J). , * * Though only a field of nine weighed 'out for the, Kia Ora Handicap, and nono of them high-class hacks, the bet- ■ ting was very spirited, Orchus being finally sent out better backed than Callanmoro (Absurd—Blackada), with Miirkmint a good third selection, and heavy support also for Inflame, Mea- , dow Lark, and Greymist. Inflame, Meadow Lark, and Callanmoro were the first to show out, and at the turn into the course proper Callanmore, on the i rails, and Meadow Lark were going the : best. The latter stuck to his work much better than ho did at the finish in his race on Thursday, but Callanmore was, too good for him over the last half-furlong, and ran home a comfortable winner by two lengths from Meadow Lark, who beat Markraint by a length. Greyfinch and Inflame were next. This win again placed T, Green a point ahead in the struggle for the jockey premiership, which is being so grimly fought out by this apprentice and Ron. Reed. Investments, £12,065$ (£12,167).
