TELEPHONE SYSTEM.

to TUB EDITOW Sir,—On Saturday I had occasion to make inquiries from tho .North-east Valley Post Office regarding a telegram. .Naturally, 1 looked for tho number under tho heading ‘’Post and Telegraph Department,” but it was not there. A thorough search of the book failed to reveal the truant figures. Telephones at the private residences of the head chauffeur, the custodian, and the head messenger were prominently displayed, but nowhere was mention made of any suburban post, office. Later it was discovered to me that, in order to communicate with the smaller post offices, one must first obtain the desired number from “Information.” Surely this is a peculiar state of affairs. Does the department consider tho numbers of tho private residences of its minor heads more important than those of its trading centres? Is it essential that business men and other# must be humbugged by first ringing “ Information ’’ when desiring communication with a suburban post office? Or does the department consider that the saving of space entailed by the

omission of these numbers outweighs the value of the “Information” attendant's time? If so, it sadly undervalues its employees, for everyone who lias had occasion to use the information bureau appreciates its value. There must bo some good reason for the department’s omission. Can anyone ex-plain?-»J. am, etc., M.X.B. July iG.
