LOYAL ORANGE INSTITUTION
ANNUAL SERVICE,
The Loyal Orange Institution held its animal church service yesterday afternoon in the Early Settlers’ Hall A large attendance of Orangemen was present. The Blayor (Blr \V. B. Taverner) presided. Prior to the service a parade of 200 Orangemen, under Bro. E. A. Benfell (district director rf cere; monies), formed at Leith street and marched to the hall to tho strains ol the Dunedin Highland Pipe Baud. _ The grand master of the Protestant AllianceFriendly Society, with his officers, and members of sister lodges were also pro sent. ■
The service was opened by the National Anthem, which was followed by a hymn. Bro. Benfell gave a prayer, and' all present then sang “ The Bible Song” of the institution The Rev. J. Heggie gave a Scripture reading (Galatians, chapter 5), after which Miss Blartin rendered a solo. Bro. Benfell recited the Qualifications of an Orangeman, and tlio choir of the Dundas Street Methodist Church gave an anthem. The Rev. W. H. Hocking'expressed his appreciation at the honour accorded him in asking him to deliver the address on such an important occasion. He compared the Protestant and Roman Catholic religions from the point of view of an Orangeman. Man was incurably religious, and his religion, comprehensively speaking, was; presented in the forms of Protestantism and Roman Catholicism. He deplored the fact that too many Protestants were uncharitable and intolerant of others? beliefs. Such people were 'harmful to their cause. Every individual had the right to worship as he or she desired, and ho proceeded to trace the straggle for leligious liberty throughout the ages. At Hie conclusion of the address Onward Christian Soldiers ’ was sung, and the Rev. J. Pringle terminated the service with the Benediction.
