‘SORRELL AND SON ’
FOR THE STRAND. ‘ Sorrell and Son ’ said to bo ono of the most appealing pictures ever made, will open its Dunedin Season at the Strand Theatre next Friday, This 'picture, filmed by Herbert Brcuon, under the Joseph M. Schench banner for United Artists, has its locale in England. Therefore it was in keeping with the spirit of the story that the director of ‘ Peter Pan,’ ‘ Beau Gestc,’ and other successes should select British-born players for many of tho important roles. Many ol the scones also were filmed in England. Tho author, Warwick Deeping, is an Englishman, and the story tells of the heart-breaking experiences of an English gentleman when lie tries to gather up'the broken threads of his hie after the war. Brcnon made a trip to England to confer with Mr Deeping on tho transferring of his novel to the screen, Mr Breiion being one of those rare souls in screenland who believes that tho author of. a literary masterpiece has certain fundamental rights in Ids creation which should bo respected. Brenon himself was horn in Ireland and educated in England. Tho leading role, that of “ Sorrell,” is enacted by H. 13. Warner. His father, Charles Warner, was a celebrated English actor. H. B. Warner went to the United States in 1905 and at once made,for himself an enviable place on tho American stage. His wife, Rita Stamvood, was on tho stage before their marriage. Mr Warner is tho father of two daughters, Joan and Lorraine, and a son, 11. B. Warner, jmi. This latter fact is said to have added io the sympathetic portrayal ho gives as Sorrell and Son, a story of father-and-son love. Another Britisher in the cast is Norman Trevor, who was born in Calcutta, India, the scion of a prominent English family. Trevor started life as a tea planter, later turning his attention to athletics. Ho was awarded a niedal in Paris as an entrant in tho Olympic Games. He wont upon the stage in Loudon over his aristocratic father’s protest. When ho went to America ho was at once pronouncedly successful. Lionel Belmore, who plays tho role of poor old “Palfrey,” is yet another born under the Union - Jack. There are also a numbered players in smaller parts,who were born on the,tight little island. Among tho other leading players in ‘Sorrel and Son’ arc Anna Q. Nilsson, Nils Asthcr, Alice Joyce, Carmel Myers, Louis Wolheim, Mary Nolan, Mickey M'Ban, Flobelle Fairbanks, Paul M'Allister, and Betsy Ann Hislc.
