The police paid a visit to the Taita Hotel, some miles past Lower Hutt, on Sunday, June 3, and found a number of persons on the premises. Several of these were each fined £2 to-day, and the licensee, Ernest Thom Hbrne, was fined £o for selling liquor. In the case of five other men, however, and three women, the defence was raised that they were bona fide travellers. They all slept the previous night in Wellington, as evidence was called to show, and on the ground that they diad spent the night at least three miles away, counsel submitted that they were not obliged to give an explanation why they were at the hotel. Several of those concerned said it was their custom to visit tho hotel on Sunday for tea The magistrate reserved his decision, with a view to looking into the legal aspect of the matter.
