FANCIERS’SHOW

AUSPICIOUS OPENING HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED There was a large attendance at the annual show of the Dunedin Fanciers’ Club in Brydone Hall both yesterday afternoon . and last night,-the large entries and high standard of the exhibits creatin ga very favourable impression. Dogs, canaries, poultry, and pigeons are all strongly represented, and to young people the show is really something in the nature of an education, and should not be missed. ", It will be continued to-night and to-morrow, and the attendance has only to equal that of the opening day to make the present show one of the best in the history of the club. Further results:— HOMER PIGEONS Mr F. Kingsford (the judge, of tho homer pigeons’ class) said that it was sixteen years since he had last been in Dunedin, but taking the birds all through there was, of course, a groat improvement on what had been exhibited then. Some really nice specimens were shown, which just failed in their end flights. All round, however, they were very good samples. The 500-milo cock ■ and hen were both good birds, and the 200-mile hen was something really special Working homer, GOO miles.—A. Stevenson 1, G. T. Coutts 2, E. L. Tonks 3 Flying homer, GOO miles.—A. CANARIES Tlio judges (Messrs T. Wilkinson and R. W. Tliompson) said that the canaries were well staged and in fair condition. There were some very good birds,. but a drawback was that the judges had. to handle-all clear birds to see it tho markings were .on them, whereas it the birds were clear of the perch it would not be necessary to handle. Some very nice untlighted j young birds were shown, but most of ; the .Yorkshires and Norwich classes i were deficient in head and neck. The entries were a record. NORWICH SECTION, NOVICE CLASS. Hanson) said that, so far as fancy breeds were concerned, there was nothing outstanding about Silver Wyandottes, but the lirst prize pullet and hen were very nice birds, with nice clean lacing. The Black Orpington pullet and cockerel were classy birds, though inclined to be of the utility type. There was nothing outstanding about the Rhode Island Reds, and, us a whole, this class was an average lot. The winning cockerel and hen in the Golden Pencil Hamburgs class were good specimens, and the winning pullet in the White Leghorn class was a good bird, the winning pullet in Houdans also being a nice bird. ' Tho winning Black .Min-" ore:, cock was an outstanding bird, and the Minorca pullet was a typical bird. The Autonas as a class left much to be desired. Speaking of tbo heavy utility breeds,-the judge said that the class, as a whole, was just an average lot, and not quite'up to Uic standard of previous years. Buff Orpingtons were a good class, a marked improvement being shown in this breed. Though a championship class, there was nothing outstanding in the Light Sussex- class, the markings not being too good. WYANDOTTES. Silver-laced hen. —B. Rogcrson 1, Mrs J. B. White 2 and 3.
