TROTTING FIXTURES Juno 23, 27.—Auckland T.C.

Of the £1,400 provided by the Ashburton Trotting Club lor the seven handicap events on Saturday £683 was provided by owners in nomination and acceptance fees. Royal Tea may bo sent to George Price again to bo trained at Randwick. Bad luck at the start settled any chance ho had on the last day at Ellerslic. Hyperion, who is now' an inmate or T. IT. Gillctt’s stable, will probably contest the steeplechase event at the forthcoming Ashburton Meeting. Hyperion has shaped well during tho past month as a follower of the Christchurch Hunt Club hounds. Mr A. J. Toxward has a coming threo-year-old sister to Star Stranger receiving her preliminary education under H. Batten at Feilding. The hlly is stated to bo solidly built, and more like her distinguished relative timn their disappointing brother Star God. Auckland trainers arc heaping bouquets on Mr A. G. Mabce, secietaiy of tho Auckland Trotting Club, who is taking au interest in the improvement of tho training tracks at Alexandra Park. According to northern critics, the facilities for getting horses ready at Epsom are better than ever they have been. . An interesting work-out was witnessed at Alexandra Park, Auckland, over tho week-end, when the rapidlyimproving pacer Western King and Gold Jacket were associated over a journey. They wont at a three-quartei clip for the lirst mile and a-balt, and then stepped ou tho gas in earnest. The pace was a cracker, with Western King in front at tho finish. The former Australian pacer made a >ot m friends by his performance. Recently Native Prince slipped on a road and slightly injured one of his legs. Ho recovered quickly, and in a work-out with Jewel Pointer lie showed that ho has improved since he went to Auckland. Amplifier, who was shipped to Sydney last week, is a half-brother to Chignon, who includes in her successes the Australian Jockey Ciub’s Gimcrack Stakes. Amplifier has figured in public on half a dozen occasions, her record to date being four seconds, Tho ex-Trenthara filly Chit was apparently unlucky to he beaten recently in a race at Mooneo Valley. She is now known as Pamona, for her New Zealand name had already been claimed in tho Commonwealth. She was not well placed curly, and then after moving up smartly rounding Urn turn swung wide and lost ground. She finished well, but the winning post was too close. She will pay to follow, adds an Australian writer.

L. Pino, it is staled, will join up with his father with the intention of schooling Troilus in his preparation for tho Wellington Racing Club’s Winter Meeting four weeks lienee. When asked whether or not he would ultimately take on hurdle riding Pino replied in the_ negative. The only instance on which ho will ride over sticks will be to pilot Troilus in his engagements at Trentham.

Steeplechasers of class arc nut difficult to sell in England at some parts of the year. It is stated the owner ot the live-year-old gelding Patron Saint recently refused Ilj,ooUgs for his horse. Nor would the owner of Master Billie listen to an offer of 5,000 gs and a contingency; and the owner of the livo-year-old gelding Easy Virtue, Shaun Spadah’s half-brother, turned down an offer of 7,000 gs for him. The records show that Fclstoad was bred by Mr J. Watts. Felkingtou (dam of the Derby winner), with a colt foal at foot by Planet and covered by Spion Kop, was submitted to auction at Newmarket in July, 1924, when she was sold to Mr A. T. Watts for 2,100g5. There is no mention of the colt Foal (Felstead) Felkington threw in 1925 being submitted to auction either at the yearling stage of his career or afterwards, and it would therefore seem as though the colt was bought privately by Sir H. CunliffeOwen. The following Riccarton-trained rising two-year-olds will be known as follows:—Pixie Lad, br g by Paper Money —Gazeworthy; Stately, b f by Paladin —Limelight; Netley, b f by Martian — Sweet Charity; Honour, ch c by Limond—Homage; Swiftray, b g by Arrowsmith—Sungleam,; Jaleux, b g by Sutala —Egotism; Bay Queen, b f by Saltash—Fairy Lass; Coraiqne, br f by Limond—Farce; Desert Song, b g by Hunting Song—Trebelli; Sir Roland, b g by Paladin—Boneria; Juniper, b g by Kilbroucy—Judith: Dutch Money, b f by Paper Money—Dutch Clock; Meprisant, ch g by Paladin—Disdainful.

Two years ago Clan Robert won the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase. Twelve months later ho made a great effort to take In's second National, but the lightly-weighted Nyangny stood in his path. Now Clan Robert will make his second attempt to win his second National. Should he win or run well, it is quite possible ho will bo brought to New Zealand to contest the Grand National at Riccarton in August. That a big programme has been mapped out for him is indicated by the tact that if he should prove successful in New Zealand lie will then Tie shipped to England, where ho will he given a chance to _ distinguish himself in the Grand National at Ain tree. The paucity of jumpers in the dominion at present is emphasised by the nominations received for the Hawke’s Bay Meeting. The entry for the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase is hardly superior to a hack and hunter event if Puwhero and Maunga were omitted. Gaze has boon nominated, hut lie has yet to prove himself as a ’chaser, and if ho runs at the mooting it is more likely to Iks in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, in which the field relatively is as poor as that of the steeplechase. Ballyfarnon, Puwhero, and Gaze are in both races, and the hurdle race looks sure to bo of one-dividend proportions. The hack steeplechase has fdlecl really well, however, and possibly may produce some likely jumping recruits. At least it is to be hoped so. The ex-New Zealander, H. Cairns, is riding over hurdles again in Victoria. Commenting on his recent win on The Ringer at Moonce Valley, “Cardigan ” says: “The Ringer, with Cairns in the saddle, won the Federal Hurdle Race in the easiest possible style. Cairns was seen to advantage on the St. Anton gelding, as he allowed him to take his time in the early stages, and then gradually made up his. ground until he was alongside the pacemaker. Broadblade, at the half-mile. He jumped the last hurdle better than Brondhlado, and from then on was not troubled. Jt was The Ringer’s best form, and, although he has not in the past given any indication of being above the ordinary, he is too good a sort to discard when summing up Grand National chances. We have several good riders over jumps in Melbourne, hut the return of Cairns to the ranks of jumping riders is welcome, ns it is a pleasure to watch him sitting so still when his mount takes an obstacle.”-

Acron claims an engagement on the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s Meeting, hut the mile record holder will require to be at his best to have any chance in the mile event. He is handicapped at 2min lOsec for the distance, which he covered in 2min 3 3-oseo on November 13, 1924, when he nut up the record. ■ The entries received by the Canterbury Jockey Club for future classic events show a. decrease on the total for last year, the respective figures lor seven races being 684 and 861. each event contributing to the falling off. The totals are as follow, lasi year’s figures being given in parentheses: Welcome Stakes ,99 (112) , Nen Zealand Derby 12S (177), New Zealand Oaks 61 (94), Champagne Stakes 116 (146) Middle-Park Plate 71 (87), Challenge Stakes, 1929, 91 (106), Challenge Stakes,, 1930, 118 (139;. There is a ’large number of Canter-bury-trained horses engaged on the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s Winter Meeting. Among those who have engagements are:—-Peter Bingen, Acron, Jean M'Elwyn, Henry Logan, Wharepiana, Great Triumph, Tamerlane, Petroleuse, Real tho Great, Swiftbine, . Kempton, Harold Thorpe, King Pointer, Harry Audubon, Bing Boy, Daytime, Nccrson, Mate o’ Mine, Dundas Boy, Great Bingen, Almriri, Talaro, Cardinal Logan, Sea Pearl, Logan Chief, Quality, Peter Swift, Tom Thumb, Talent. Young Blake, Dulraeny, Parkwood, Rose Ando, Dolores, Trampcrisp, Repute. Dillon S., Jackie Audubon Great Actress. Lingfield, Free Advice. Harvest Child, Pageant, and Direct Todd.

When tho New South Wales champion pacer,Sheik made his first appearance on the Perth trotting track for training purposes ho was greatly admired, and was tho centre of a good deal of interest. Just what Sheik will bo capable of over there is problematical, owing to the small circumference of the Perth track and night racing, which affects many horses new to tho game. Ho will be asked to give starts to tlic best of tho Westralinn horses, but bo has handled himself so wed in private on the course that his now owner, Mr Cliff Clarke, who has one of the best trotting strings in tho West, is very confident. Another horse of class who is to do his future racing in Perth is Main Voyage, a son of Grand Voyage. He has won some good races at Richmond (Victoria), and will race in tho interests of his breder, Mr M. Nugent, of Rochester, Victoria, while in Western Australia.

Apparently the South African Jockey Club is experiencing some trouble in regard to the leasing of horses, because some of the prominent breeders refuse to soil their yearlings outright, but will only lease them. An effort is being made to more or Jess compel owners to sell. Sir Abe Bailey is in the field in support of this, and in a long letter to the Johannesburg ‘ Sunday Times ’ asks the breeders whether they think it is in, the interests of racing to try to undermine the authority of the Jockey Club by taking racing problems to Parliament. He states—and it is obvious that the question might apply to many of tho Legislature in Now Zealand: “Breeders do not realise the danger of bringing the subject of horse racing in any form under discussion in our Parliament, where many members are not over fond of tho racecourse, and think the Jockey Club is composed of jockeys only, ; and who care ns much about racing as a gelding does about marriage.” Under the heading of ‘Hares and Horses ’ a writer in the ‘ Australasian Trotting Record’ says; “A Sydney coursing club recently wired to the Tatura (Vic.) Club lor forty trained hares, ottering to and £2 respectively per pair for bucks and docs. At the Dandcnong (Vic.) horse sale recently seventy horses were sold up to t2 per head to bone mill merchants, and .at this figure competition is keen for • killers.’ It seems a tragedy that man's (late) ‘noblest frienu ’ should thus be sacrificed, and, to add insult to injury, at a lesser price than obtained lor the common or garden hare, Draught horses still command good ligures, and shipping horses arc hard to obtain. It will nut be lung before light horse supplies arc exhausted, and lor well-bred trotting stock in the near luturo a good demand must set in. ’ Just prior to the Great Northern Meeting twelve months ago tho Ellerslio trainer, J. Thorpe, had an experience which fell to the lot of tho Alatamata trainer, W. H. Patterson, this year. It will be remembered that twelve months ago J. Thorpe had two horses in preparation for tho meeting;they wore Chamour and Lomint, but a day or two before the meeting Chamour broke a log und hud to he destroyed. This was a severe loss to the owner, Air B. Goldwater, as only a short while before ho had refused an offer of 1,500 guineas for the horse. However, the bad luck was lightened a little wlieu Lomint came out and won tho Cornwall Handicap, but she broke down badly after the race. This year W. H. Patterson came down from Alatamata with two horses, Levensido and Aliss New Zealand. His stroke of bad luck came when Levensido, owned by Air IV. Wade, was killed while schooling last week. As was the case with J. Thorpe last year, W. Patterson won with Aliss New Zealand, hut it was a much smaller event than the Cornwall. While New South Wales has had a free leg with regard to the hoppled division of tho Alclbourne Derby, that State has not specialised in trotters, and since the trotting division of the first Derby was won by a New South Walesbred filly, whose time has never since been approached, Victoria has had the field to itself as regards the squaregaited division.- It would appear (saj's a Melbourne writer) that Victoria is about to get new opposition in tho trotting division of next year’s Derby, ns a New Zealand owner, who lias a promising; youngster engaged, has stated bis intention of sending him across. The colt is Koro Peter, by Peter Aloko from Kora Ena. At the recent Cambridge Aleeting in Now Zealand, opposexl to a field of all-aged trotters, tho two-year-old won, covering the mile and a-half in 3niiu 54 3-ssec. The track was alow, and the time ha, never boon equalled by a trotter of that ago in the dominion. Night Sign won tho trotting division of'the Melbourne Derby, covering the mile in 2min 44Jsoc. The Now Zealand two-year-old covered tho mile and a-half at a bit better than a 2min 36sec gait. What Koro Peter will bo able to knock off_ that time as a three-year-old remains to be seen, but ho certainly looks to have a mortgage on the trotting division of next year’s Derby should all go well with him.
