Mr W. A. ITaveil, manager Westport Coal _ Company, left for Wellington this morning on his company’s business. Mr D. C. Cameron, bourn] for Palmerston North, was a passenger by to-day’s through express. Mr A. M/Gowan, general manager in Now Zealand for Australasian Films, Ltd., is on his way from Dunedin to Wellington.
Mr Robert Conn was a passenger for Auckland by the 11.34- train to-day. Mr Arthur Ibbotson left this morniinj fop Tim am.
The Hon. James Craigie went to Timaru from Dunedin to-day, and goes on to Lyttelton to-morrow
Mr W. Hogg, of Timaru, went home today after visiting Dunedin. A Whangarci Press Association telegram states that an election to fill a vacancy on the borough council resulted in the return of Mrs Foote, with 395 votes. . Tho three male opponents polled 192, 160, and 140 respectively. Cabled advice has been received by Archbishop Averil! (says a Press Association, telegram from Auckland) that the Synod of the diocese of Melanesia, sitting at Siotn, British Solomon Islands, has unanimously chosen Bishop Molyneux, at present assistant bishop, as successor to Bishop Steward. A delegation from Melanesia will bo sent to meet the bishops of tho province of New Zealand, with whom the final selection rests. The selection will probably be made in Wellington in August.
Miss Hilda. Scurr, of Dunedin, daughter of Mr J. W. Sourr, has accepted an eugagement with tlie Allan Wilkie Shakespearian Company, and will leave for Sydney next week. Mr I’. it. M. Jlunau, for some years assistant manager at Auckland, has been appointed manager of the National Bank in this city. Mr I. S. Cantrell, who has been temporarily in charge here since tho death of Mr H. S. Hammond, has been appointed assistant manager at Auckland. At the monthly meeting of the Dunedin Burns Club, held last evening, Messrs Wm. Nicolson, Alex. M'Millan, and Neil M'Donaid were elected as the club’s delegates for the ensuing year to the Council of the Dunedin Scottish Societies. Cr J. S. Douglas was last night reappointed to represent the City Council as a member of the University Council. Among those staying at the Grand Hotel are Mr C. N. Forrest (New York), Major M. E. Dunham. Messrs R. W. Parkhurst and J. H. Bovau (Sydney). Mr L. Cheyne (Auckland), Mr H. 11. Holland, M.P. (Christchurch), Mr I’. Black, Mrs T. A .Nicholson, Mr and Mrs T. Wallace (Invercargill).
