FANCIERS’ SHOW

A GREAT DISPLAY LARGE ENTRIES AND GOGD STANDARD A stray visitor to the Brydono Hall to-day might have imagined that Bedlam was lose, for as he entered he would bo greeted with the barking of innumerable dogs, the crowing of roosters, the soft cooing of pigeons, and the whistling of 300 canaries. The hall is the scene of the annual show of the Dunedin Fanciers’ Club, which opened this morning, and will bo continued to-morrow and on Friday. Splendid entries have been received, in all there being 1,100 animals and birds exhibited. One of the features of the whole show is the fine display of canaries, the entry being the largest for many years. Poultry classes have attracted the usual amount of attention, and the fancy pigeons’ class has also drawn a. good entry, the standard, too, being a high one. The entries in the Homer section are a little disappointing, but, as a whole, the class is a good one. The children’s pets and cats will not bo judged until to-mor-row. Everything points lo this year’s show , being one of the most successful yet held, and the general arrangements are in the capable hands of the secretary (Mr G. _ Thomson). Mr Coutts mads an efficient superintendent. Results to date POULTRY. The utility judges were Messrs W. Macdonald and. J. J. Jowsey, who said that the class as a whole was a very god one, though the entries wore not quite as good as was the case in previous years. In some respects,_ however, the exhibits seemed to point to the fact that poultry men were going back in their work, as they did not reach the standard they should. The Leghorn pullets were a very good class, the cockerels being another good class. The other classes were very poor. Brown Leghorns had attracted few entries, and were not up to the standard of previous years, the standard of Minorcas also showing a drop. Black Leghorns were a weak class. BANTAMS. Duckwing cock.—W. Tibbies) said that the exhibits in this class generally were the best he had seen for many years, and he had had a wide experience both in Australia and New Zealand. The black-and-red classes were particularly good. Tho champion cock was a typical example of the breed, and really won on his type, though two other birdss ran him very close. FANCY PIGEONS. The numbers have improved this year in this class, there being an exceptionally nice show of fantails. Frills were in good force, several nice turbits being shown. In self tumblers some exceptionally good reels were shown. Though few in number, Jacobins wore good in quality. Ono of the nicest birds in the show, a bloadiuctte. was_ shown iu the boys’ class, and summing up, the exhibits generally point to fancy pigeons again coming into their own in Dunedin. A nice class of bulldog was shown, the winning dog being one of the best seen hero for a number of years. The winning bitch was also a sound, good one. Airedales also made a nice class. The winning Irish terrier was a really good dog, tiro best seen here for a long . time. Smooth fox terriers were a poor 1 lot, but the winning wire-haired ter-1 riers were exceptionally good. Five very fine Cairn terriers were shown for tho first time in Dunedin, and were fit to win in any show. The Sydney Silkies were the finest class yet seen in Dunedin, the winning dog being a very nice animal. Tho bitch class tho better of tho two, the first, second, arid third being nice specimens. Mr H. C. Oottli (judge of the cocke"’ spaniels) said that this class represented the finest Jot of cocker spaniels seen in Dunedin for years, both as regards quality and the size of tho entries.
