SCOTLAND YARD METHODS
THE SAVfDGE CASE INQUIRY CLOSED LONDON, Juno 13. f Received June 14, at 12.30 p.m.) The final stage lias been reached in the Savidgo inquiry, and counsel have delivered their speeches. Mr Birkett contended that the charge against the police had not been sustained. Mr Johnston’s charges in the House of Commons had created a false impression If Sir Chiozza Money had entered the witness bos at the original hearing he could have shed much light on the occurrences, on the night of . Miss Savidge’s return from Scotland Yard. He apparently wanted to let the matter drop. His counsel (Mr Syrett) adopted a similar attitude. Counsel for Miss Savidge said that Sir John Simon put the public viewpoint when ho said that every citizen must regard the case as if it might happen to his own daughter. What father would perimt a girl of twentyone to be handed over to three police officers and taken to Scotland Yard “ I regard with abhorrence,” be said, “ the practice which permits the Chief Constable or Chief Inspector to say ‘ we wanted the girl to come to Scotland Yard and she was willing.’ It is important that if the poice are to continue to hare the powers they possess tbev must act on them properly.” The inquiry then closed.—Australian Press-United Service.
