PORT CHALMERS ROAD

REPAIRS TO BE EFFECTED Several letters in reference to the bad condition of the lower road between Dunedin and Port Chalmers were read at the monthly meeting of the Otago Motor Club last night, and a deputation concerning the same matter waited on the club. Air R. Poison, wbo beaded the dopntaion, said ho had never experienced roads that were in such a bad condition as far as potholes were concerned as this particular road. He was sure it tho Motor Club took up this matter it could do something to put tho road into shape. Ho thought the road would bo declared a main highway, so that anything dono now would not be wasted.' Tho road had reached such a ’state that motorists were pow glad to leave their cars at home'End take the train to tho city. Air A. Coleman endorsed what Air Poison had said. He had to use the read frequently at night, and when there haci been any wet weather the road was almost umiscable.

Mr F. j. Williams said tho trouble was that in the past the local bodies concerned had bad limited resources. The road had now been gazetted as a highway, and £1,500 would be spent in metalling and surfacing the road, the Main Highways Board would find £1)00 of. this amount, and the local authorities £G0l). That would bo as lar as it was possible to go ibis year. Tho length of tho road was about seven miles, so that meant that about £2OO per mile would be available, and that should mean that the road would be put in pretty fair order. The money would be spent as soon as possible, and work would go on for the next four or live months. Tho worst portions would bo attended to first. He thought it woijld bo an excellent idea if the Main Highways Board took over this road at once, and then assessed the proportion of the cost of its reconstruction to bo borne by the local bodies concerned. Ho moved in this direction. Mr Ansell seconded the motion, i ml said that, in view of tho fact that the Highways Board was receiving considerable support from motorists, it should lake .some stops to have this road reconstructed. Tho motion was curried.
