WAIPORI CARTAGE.
TO THIS EDITOR. Sir, —The panic-stricken manner in which Waipori matters are being dealt with at present suggests that all is not well at our power source. The urgency of the work is not denied, but what has happened to cause the committee responsible to rush into the proposed purchase of motor chassis to the tune of £7,000? The imputation is, of course, that the necessary plant is not iu Otago. I am assured that no inquiries have been made by the department concerned as to whether or not the local firms engaged in this class ot work are able to undertake the necessary work. On the other hand, I have been assured that more than one firm is able to perform the services required and are willing to enter into a substantial bond to ensure the work being completed within the necessary time Why send £7,01)0 away if we have the necessary plant hero at the present time? Why has it so suddenly been discovered that the work is urgent? Surely this has been obvious for the last twelve mouths! Also it might be pertinent to ask: When was it discovered that a road was desirable to transport some thousands of tons ol heavy material to the site of the proposed work? It seems to me that the proposal to import these motor vehicles is to cover the omission to foresee the necessity of forming a road for the use of the department. It is perfectly obvious that the concentration of sm-fi heavy cartage over the class of country at Waipori demands a suitable road if the work is to be efficiently carried outI trust that the City Council will, before agreeing to the proposal to import these motor vehicles, first of all make full inquiries into the capabilities of the machinery at present at their disposal. —I am, etc., A. IC. Anset.t. Juno 13.
