A WELSH SOCIETY.

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —Three letters now 1 have read in your deservedly popular paper ( all urging the forming of a Welsh society. 1 was bom in Welsh Wales (Merionethshire), and would like the chance to keep my mother tongue in practice, so 1 write these few lines to help cheer on those who want to form a society hero. “ Reufy,” in his letter, complains that tho sermon during the S. Dafydd Day service in Christchurch was not preached in Welsh. Well, no, “Reufy.” Supposing the preacher came from Bcttys-y-Coed and you irom Cardiff, seeing you have been out here, where nothing but the English- language is spoken, for quite a lot of years, with no chance to keep in touch with tho beautiful cadences of our national tongue, would the whole of tho sermon reach you as the preacher wanted it to? Then, again, perhaps “ Reufy ” has married, as I have, a colonial who only speaks two languages —English and the one he uses when looking for his studs. Tho children (if old enough) would be coming to tho meetings, and they would hardly he understanding one word if only Welsh were used. I want a Cynunrac society formed so that I can keep my own tongue in practice, and so that ray children can learn to speak and love , our beautiful language and some of tho legendary lore and traditions of the unconquered nation. But on S. Dafydd’s Day, when a big Welsh church service is held, let tho sermon be preached in Englidi, so that we can tell the people of this land something of the ways and thought of Hen Wlad fv Nhadan in a language they can understand. Let us hurry up and get the society formed so we can hold a service the very next S. Dafydd Day that is. Perhaps some of the big people who are also Welsh or of Welsh extraction could call a meeting in, say, a fortnight some evening at some cen-trallv-situated church. —I am, etc., Mtvaxwt. June 13.
