‘ GETTING GERTIE’S GARTER ’ AMD 1 THE BIG KOISE '

At; las-t we. have ‘ Gertie ’ charmingly interpreted by piquant Marie Provost, and the intriguing tale of her decorative feminine appendage brought to the screen in the hirst National photo-play version of the famous stage play, ‘ Getting Gertie’s,Gartcr,’ punctuated naturally by do luxe laughs and riotous humour ad lib. The lively and daring plot revolves around the main theme, which, of course, is concerned with the notorious garter, which is the innocent and unprotesting cause of a tangled web of intrigue, wherein is sprinkled liberally elegant blondes, vivid brunettes, disporting themselves through an amazing variety of amusing situations. Charles Pay is the lover who, after presenting “ Gertie ” with ids portrait ingeniously affixed to the garter, suddenly decides that there is something in this “ Gentlemen Prefer” complex, and promptly falls in love with a beautiful blonde. Quite naturally ho desires to regain possession of the garter, and most of the fun is centred round his frantic efforts to regain it. Marie Prevost is particularly good as “ Gertie,” and a strong supporting cast, who are all responsible for fine characterisations in this entertaining farce, includes Sally Rand, Fritzi Ridgway. and Franklin Panpborn. Tins film opens at the Empire Theatre on Friday. Coney Island, the playground of New York's 5.000,000 people, plays an important part in ‘The Rig Noise,’ the second picture. All the glamour and oolonr of the famous carnival of fun isbrought to the screen, and presents a vivid contrast to the scenes showing Now York’s lower East Side, where much of the action in the picture takes place. ‘The Rig Noise’ was written for First National. Pictures by Ron Hecht, and centres around the power of the sensational American newspaper in making and breaking reputations overnight. Chester Conklin plays the featured role in the production. The supporting cast includes Alice While, Sam Hardy, David Torrance, Rodil Rosing, Jack Egan, and many others. Some fine and interesting snaps of the Edmond Cup steeplechase hold at Wingafui are included in this week’s local news film.
