Colonel Thoms, D. 5.0., passed through Dunedin this morning on his way from Invercargill to Oamaru. Mr W. J. P. M'Culloch, booked for Wellington, left by the through express to-day. Mr James Nimmo was a passenger for Blenheim by to-day’s 11.34 express. Mr Irvine Elston, manager of the Opera House at Christchurch, returned to that city by train to-day from Dunedin. Mr W. Shepherd left this morning foi a month’s holiday at Rotorua and Auckland. A number of schoolmen assembled on the Dunedin railway station this morning to see off Mr J. H. A, MThee, who was for many years on the staff of the George Street School. He is going for a nine months’ trip to America, England, and the Continent, and will visit his mother’s brother in Texas. The death is announced of Mr J. B. Harcourt, president of the Wellington Racing Club.—Prass Association. A New Plymouth Press Association telegram states that Mr William Hooker, aged seventy-two, a very old settler, who was knocked down by a motor cycle on Sunday night- when crossing a street, died in the hospital last night. Mr J. N. Miller, an ex-Otago Rugby full-back, who is now a resident of Sydney, is visiting Dunedin prior to leaving here on Saturday on a trip to tho Old Country. The death is announced of Mr J. Lister Kay, a well-known business man of Christchurch. Mr Kay arrived in isew Zeamnd from England as district manager for the Yorkshire Insurance Company in 1901. He was a wellknown Mason, and a prominent member of the Canterbury Kennel Club; also ho was for many years a member of the St. Albans and Christchurch Bowling Clubs, and was a member of tho champion rink at St. Albans in 1916.

The Canterbury College Board of Governors has recommended tho appointment of Mr Richard Wall work, A.R.C.A., as director of the Canterbury College School of Art. The appointment has yet to bo ratified by tho Education Department, Wellington. The appointment of Mr Wallwork will lie very popular. He came to New Zealand beiore the war under engagement as first assistant in the School of Art. His experience is extensive in. many branches of art. and under his direction the life study work at the School of Art has reachcd_ a very high standard. Mr Wallwork is one of the leading painters in tho dominion.— Christchurch correspondent. Mr Walter Seavill, sheep farmer, of Waingaro, has been selected as tho Reform Party’s candidate at the General Election for Raglan. Mr Seavill has served on the Council, tho Hospital Board, and the Absentee Soldiers’ Board. The Education Board Ims made the following appointments:—Miss C. A. W. Ferguson, sole teacher, Kakapnaka; Miss I*'. Speoden, assistant, Beaumont; Miss L. M. M‘Calluni, infant mistress, North-east Valley. Dr E. F. D’Ath, who for the past four years has occupied the position of clinical pathologist of the Medical School at the Otago University, has accepted the position of pathologist to tho Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, and lecturer in pathology to the University of Sydney. He intends to leave Dunedin in about two months’ time.
