Here is a little story about Dame Ellen Teny which is new to me (says a ‘ Daily News’ writer). She is immensely proud of the fact that she is a native of Shakespeare’s county—Warwickshire—and two people, one an eating house proprietor and the other a haberdasher, claimed to live in the house where she first saw the light. The haberdasher put up the inscription “Birthplace of Ellen Terry”; but the eating house owner went one better and replied with “ The original birthplace.” That finished his rival, who retired from the unequal competition. Father: “Have you told Doris that she will not get a penny from us if she marries this folow?” Mother: “I did better than that. I told the young man.”
