A complete agreement was reached at Wellington by tho Conciliation Council in the theatre workers’ dispute. The new conditions are’ to apply to the Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago districts. Samuel Arthur Pudney alias Ted Smith alias Jones appeared before Air E. H Eton, J.P., in the Magistrate’s Court, Mastcrton, on a charge ot escaping from the Auckland prison on December 5, 1926. The accused was remanded to appear at Wellington on Friday. He was arrested early in the day at Mataikuna Station, about fifty miles from Mastcrton. Ln Hie Supreme Court, Wellington, a number of prisoners were sentenced yesterday. Leonard Henry England, aged forty, a painter, and ltd win Valentine Sbramba, aged thirty-four, a labourer, wore brought up on charges of breaking and entering and theit. England was admitted to probation for two years, and Sbramba was ordered three months’ probation. Robert Patrick Crawford, aged twenty, inr theft as a servant, was ordered two years’ detention in the Borstal Institute. .Ronald Edward Morrison, aged seventeen, a labourer, for breaking and entering and theft, and lor attempted theft, was ordered four years’ detention in the Borstal Institute Michael Patrick Aiithoncy Herlihy, aged twenty-two, for breaking and entering and theft, was placed on probation for two years. Donald Gillies, aged thirty-one, and John George Furey, aged nineteen, were brought up on charges of conspiring to defraud. The former was sentenced to two years in gaol, and the latter was given two years’ detention in the Borstal Institute. William Alma Robertson, aged thirty-tour, a labourer, for forgery and uttering, received twelve months’ imprisonment. Sydney Lambert Roach, for bigamy, was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. Trevor Leonard Richard Cunningham, aged twenty-eight, a taxi driver, for theft, was given one year’s imprisonment. The monthly meeting of the General Committee of the Patients and Prisoners’ Aid Society was held yesterday in the Returned Soldiers’ Association’s club rooms. Mr E. A. Rosevear was in the chair, and there were also present— Sir George Fenwick, Messrs D. Todd, JD. E. Theomin, J. Taylor, W. Gow, H. H. Driver, W. L. Logie, J. Loudon, C. B. Smith, E. R. Grace, and Mesdames G. Roberts, E. C. Reynolds, and J. Dey. Accounts amounting to £53 9s 8d were passed for payment. The secretary (Mr F. G. Gumming) reported that during his recent holiday he had visited many hospitals and prisons in the north with a. view to finding out what was being done in the way of community service. He saw nothing superior to the work which was being done in Dunedin, and in many wavs the efforts her© were better. The general work of the society, he added, had not been so heavy as usual during the month, but a large number of people bad called seeking help and employment. Thirty-eight applicants had been helped at an expenditure of £2l 8s 2d. Some of the cases were very deserving, —The report was adopted. An entirely satisfactory report on the affairs of the James Powell Convalescent Home was also received. The Hospital Committee’;; report stated that the secretary had requested the chairman of the Hospital Board (Mr W. E. S. Knight) to accompany him to various functions at in mental hospital, and also in connect! j.i with the society’s work at the Dunedin Hospital. Mr Knight had been greatly impressed with the work that was being done.—The report was approved.
