FORTNIGHTLY COUNCIL MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. B. Taverner), Gra Clark, Shacklock, Monro, Wilson, Black, 'Mitchell, Hayward, Scott. Bcgg, Douglas, and Campbell. WORKS REPORT. The adoption of the Works Committee’s report was moved by Cr Wilson, and in speaking to it Cr Shacklock urged the committee to devote some attention to the Tomahawk road. A resident had told him that no extraordinary sum ned be spent on the road. Quite a reasonable amount would make the road usable, and residents would be satisfied. Cr Black stressed tho need for the widening of the Kaikorai Valley road, and also said that little widening had been done in either Highgate or Ross street. Highgate in particular being in a deplorable state. Regarding the Tomahawk road, Cr Wilson said that this matter would receive immediate attention. The engineer would take immediate steps to see that it was put iu passable repair until some permanent footpath was put there. So far as Cr Black’s remarks concerning st’/'c' widening were concerned, he said that there was no doubt but that tho council had done its full share of street widening. At last meeting £I,OOO had been passed for Ross street. The money that was being passed for street widening was done out of revenue, and he thougiit the council was doing all it could in the matter of street widening at the present time. If high prices for the properties in Kaikorai road were not asked the committee would probably recommend that the widening be done. in reply to a question by Cr Mitchell concerning the amount spent on maintenance in George street from Albany street to St. David Cr Wilson said that it would be possible to give a rough estimate of the cost. They had hopes of tar-paving George street, and putting to the best use the plant they had. The report was adopted. TENDERS, Tenders were accepted as follows: Two-ton truck for Waipori, Albion truck, £792; supply of pipes and plumbing w’ork at St. Clair Bath. A. G. Bayliss, £127; supply and delivery of 100 tons of 4in cast iron spun gas pipes in 12ft lengths, Duthie and Co., Wellington, £1,314 13s 4d.
