AVONDALE TRAINING

WORK ON NEW COURSE. [Special to the ‘Stas.’] AUCKLAND, April 13. A lot of interest centred on the me ing of Aussie and Awarere at Avondale this morning, racing students wishing to get a line on the properties of the new course. Aussie won a halfmile sprint by three lengths in 52 l-sscc (6Qyds out from the rails). Aussie could have done better if pushed. Joy King ran the half-mile in 53 3-ssec. Star Stranger’s time in amu home from the six-furlong post was Imin 22 2-ssec, going strongly at the finish. The most interesting work on •the plough was a mile by Papatu ami Oration in Imin 44sec. Papatu (on the outside) went the stronger. Everything points to a successful inaugural meeting on the new course.

EASTER RAGING TOTALISATOR RETURNS. (.Special to this ‘Siak.’] AUCKLAND, April 12. Just a little less money on the available figures lias passed through the totalisator at the Easter race meetings in the dominion this year than last, where there was a substantial drop from the 1926 returns. When the complete totals for all important racing carnivals in New Zealand are compiled it ■ may be found that the Easter of 1928 has arrested the decline in betting, with the result of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s concluding day to he counted, and with the turnover of the second day of the Wairarapa Meeting unavailable. The “ macliine ” throughout the principal meetings in the country over Easter handled £479,533, or £2,608 less than for the Easter of 1927, which was £48,261 down on the 1926 carnivals. Of the nine clubs taken into account only four—Riverton, Auckland, Kuniara, and Waipukurau—-showed better “tote” returns than last Easter. In the case of the Riverton three-days’ meeting the increase was surprisingly large, the amount handled being over £60,000, nearly £IO,OOO more than in the previous Easter. Aided, perhaps, by adding a race to each day’s programme, the Auckland Club improved last year's record by over £2,000. Kumara was over £I,OOO up, but Waipukurau just balanced the ledger in its favor by the amount of £6. Among the decreases this Easter were the following :—Christchurch £3,000, Feilding £5,000, New Zealand Metropolitan Club (first day) over £5,000, Wairarapa (first day) over £I,OOO. Rain dwarfed the attendance at the first day of tho New Zealand Metropolitan Meeting, and the weather did not favor the Feilding Meeting. If as is generally conceded, the amount “put on the machine ” is an indication of the economic position, it is matter for congratulation that the investments are so little behind last Easter, when it should ho noted that all the meetings showed a decrease from 1926. Auckland then had the smallest proportionate fall of them all, and this year is one of only three dubs to show an appreciable increase. CRICKET ENGLISH TEAM’S VISIT.
