Mr J. B. Dunlop, thrice chess chain-: pion of. New Zealand, is back in Dunedin, and intends to remain here. He left some years ago to reside in Oamaru, and last year he made a trip to England, and played in the London; chess tournament, finishing about midway, but having the pleasure oi beating Winter, one of the prominent English chess exponents. Mr C. J. Graham, Hillside Workshops manager, called to Wellington on departmental business, left this morning- ; -
Mr W. B. .Seymour, factory manager of Kempthorne, Prosser’s- New Zealand Drug Company, is away for a visit to England, and was seen off at 11.1,it this' morning by a large party; of the employees. Brigadier Burton came this morning from 'lnvercargill, whither ho went to conduct the. Salvation Army’s harvest, festival. . Messrs A. E. Ansell, H. Halliday, and .1. Jackson Purdie travelled today by the through express to Christchurch to attend the half-yearly meeting of the South Island Motor AssocirK lion. . Mr E. Franklin, conductor of the Kaikorai Band, loft by the express thismorning to attend the funeral ol his mother, Airs T. Franklin, a very old identity of Grcymouth.. An Auckland Association message states that Mr H. J, 1). Mahon, at present acting head master, has been appointed head master of Auckland Grammar School in succession to the late Mr J. Drummond. Both Air Drummond and Air Alahon were pupils ot the school.
Air W. B. Bridger, of Blackstonc Hill, arrived by the Central Otago train last evening. Word has been received that Dr 1). D. AFCartby, late of Dunedin and Tokaniii. has passed Ids examination in Swahili. Dr and Airs APCarthy left for the East in February of last year, and are at present situated in Zanzibar, where Dr AFCarthy is studying tropical diseases and native languages. Both have experienced, very good health since leaving New Zealand. They will leave for England at the end ol the year.
The Rev. W. Gray Dixon received a cabled intimation that Edinburgh University offered him the honorary, degree of doctor of divinity. Air Gray Dixon has replied accepting the honor, and, the degree will bo conferred on him in absentia on June ‘iS. As Edinburgh University is not, his alma mater, Air Gray Dixon being a master of arts of Glasgow University, the compliment that is being paid to him is the more greatly appreciated.
