CRICKET

LOCAL MATCHES GRANGE AND CARISBROOK WIN CAVANAGH A CENTURY. Conditions wore unpleasant, for cricket in the early part of Saturday afternoon, a light drizzly rain falling and making the ball and turf greasy. This was particularly unfortunate for the fielding sides, and made Dunedin’s and Albion’s chances of victory very meagre. Grange got the 27 runs necessary with the loss of another (their eighth) wicket, and then closed, with a view to a three-point win. Cavanagh and Norman Cherry, however, dissipated their hopes in this direction by setting up a partnership that was not dissolved until the score stood at 122. Cavanagh made exactly 100, and Cherry 40, both colts batting excellently. Dunedin closed at 169 lor six, and actually disposed of five Grange batsmen for 94 before time was called. Grange won on the first innings by 4 runs. Carisbrook, thanks largely to three young players (Smith 59, M'Leod 57, Proctor 54) easily passed the total set (hem by Albion, and gained a two-point victory by 100 runs. The Albion fielding was noticeably poor. GRANGE v. DUNEDIN.

Wanting 21 runs to top Dunedin’s 1013, and with three wickets in hand, Grange continued its innings against Torrance and Claridgo with every chance of success, for the conditions were all against the bowlers. Chadwick and Hamm added 10 runs, and then Torrance bowled the latter. Tonkinson followed, and ho and Chadwick slowly but surely brought the score to 107, no change being made in the bowling meanwhile. Galland then closed the innings.

Dunedin opened its second knock with Cavanagh and Norman Cherry. Those two colts soon settled down to work, and, despite changes in the bowling, were still going strong when the tea adjournment was taken. After this they took the score to 122, when a misunderstanding about a run resulted in Cherry being easily run out after playing an attractive innings for 40. C. Ritchie followed, and Cavanagh continue! to pile on the runs. Before he had opened his account C. Ritchie was howled by Elmes with a hall that just took the bails. 2—0—138. Rue was next, but made only 3, when be was snapped up by Galland in the slips. 3—3—150. Claridgo filled the gap, and in two big hits got into double figures. Up then put one up, and was caught by Hauau. M‘Gregor did not score, being caught off Ailoo. Then Cavanagh reached his century with a single. Next ball he rushed out to and hit hard and straight to Elmes, who look a good catch.. Six were down for 169, and Torrance closed the innings, leaving Grange fifty minutes to bat. In this time they lost five for 94, Knight baiting attractively for 43 not out. Scores;—•
