MATRICULATION
PASS STANDARD LOW ENOUGH [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, February 18. Sitting at Christchurch, the University Council considered a letter from a headmistress who urged that a pass might be allowed in the Matriculation exam to a pupil who had failed by a very narrow' margin. She gave an instance of one-fifth per cent, to gain the 45 per cent, required for a pass. In the course of discussion the general opinion was that the rules, flexible as they now were, should be adhered to strictly, and a motion to refer the letter to the Statutes Committee for consideration was defeated, the letter being received merely. After discussion the following motion was carried That a clause empowering the University to grant honorary degrees be inserted in the new Act.
