CHEMISTS’ SHOPS
SUNDAY CLOSING PROPOSAL HOT YET MOOTED LOCALLY According to legislation passed last session, chemists in any district may make a requisition to Parliament that shops should be compelled to close on Sundays, and already in Wellington the proposal to close on Sunday has been approved by an overwhelming majority, In Dunedin, however, so far the proposal has not been mooted officially, but the general opinion seems to be that the majority of chemists might be in favoiy of Sunday dosing. A leading Dunedin chemist, who was approached on the subject this morning, said that {Tie legislation gave the majority the power to rule, but be did not 'think any great handicap would be entailed were the chemists here to close on Sundays. At the present time local chemists in the majority of cases open from 7.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. on Sundays, though some also open from 11 a.m. until noon. Not a great deal of business is done on Sundays, and so long as the public are able to obtain medicine from the All Night Pharmacy little objection would seem likely to be raised to the proposal. In Invercargill for some time past the chemists have closed on Sundays, and the fact that Wellington is likely to adopt Sunday closing may have a dominion-wide effect. “ I would not be at all surprised if Dunedin falls into line,” he stated, “'but, though the matter has been discussed generally, it has yet to be mooted officially.”
