SEAMEN’S FOOD
REFUSAL TO SAIL WITH CHIEF STEWARD MAKURA HELD UP [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 31. Objection was taken to-day by the seamen on the Makura to the chief steward (Mr Thomson), on the grounds that he has given them insufficient Food. They refused to leave on the vessel for San Francisco it he was on board, even as a passenger (his homo is in San Francisco). As a result, the Makura has been delayed from 3 p.m. to-day until some time early to-morrow morning. The seamen took ballots, and were backed up by the stewards, except on the point of not having the chief steward as a passenger. He solved the difficulty by agreeing to take as a holiday the leave accruing to him, and accordingly signed off. He will proceed to San Francisco at a later day. Meanwhile a search is being conducted for the firemen, who have come ashore.
