BRITISH SAILORS' SOCIETY
The first meeting of the executive of tho British and Foreign Sailors Society for tho new year was held last night in tho Sailors’ Rest. The president, Mr H Wilkinson, occupied the chair. Hie treasurer, Mr Chas. E. Beckmgsale, reported that £24 had been received during tho past two months, but that the general fund of the City Rest was £lO in arrears. £l7 had been expended in renovating the Port Chalmers Rest, and llgs in providing entertainment for seamen in the City Rest. Among the rcceipts were £6 from St. Andrew s 1 resbyterian Church, 3gs from the Merchants’ Association, and 2gs from the Trustees Company. Mr D. L. K. Walker reported that fourteen overseas vessels had been in at Port during December and January, and that two social gatherings had been well attended and much appreciated. Eighty “ditty hags,’’ prepared by the ladies, had been distributed to tho seamen at Christmas Mr W. Buchan, lion, missioner for the City Rest, reported that twelve overseas vessels had berthed at the city wharves, but that most of them had been manned by colored crews, with whom little could be done. An excellent Christmas tea had beQii held, also a New Year’s picnic. The shortage of funds for carrying on this beneficent work was deplored, and it was stated thta £SO was urgently required for repainting and renovating the Rest.
