EIGHT-OARED ROWING
HARBOR RACE ID-NIGHT Per the first time for over twenty years an eight-oared boat race will take place in Otago Harbor to-night. The novelty of the event alone should he sufficient to attract a large attendance of the public, but considerable interest also attaches to the race because of the fact that an Otago eight-oared crew is to be picked to represent Otago in the eight-oared Now Zealand championship at Wellington on March 24. Though Otago had-not a representative on the New Zealand Selection Committee, it is confidently expected that several local men will find places in the crew that is to he nominated for participation in the Olympic Games. The race to-night will commence at 6 o’clock, and will he rowed in two heats. First, Otago and North End Clubs will meet, and then Port Chalmers will row against Queen’s Drive. The final will ho decided between the winners of the heats. The race will start at the mile and a-half channel post, and will finish in tile harbor basin between the Rattray street and Birch street wharves, so that the public will have a good view of the finishes. Should the water be too rough Ibis evening, the race will take place to-morrow night. Some of the crews taking part are as follow:—Otago: F. Brough, A. Weddell, C. M‘Arn, P. S. Anderson, H. A. Lawless, A. R. Johnstone, R-. Allan, and E. Pickford. Queen’s Drive: F. Wilson, G. Clark, T. Porter, N. Monson, L, Fountain, F. Treloar. G. Thom, and D. Matheson. North End: Fred Eggers. J. Mitchell, E. Manson, A. G. Johnston. P. Vallis, H. Eggers, D. Sutherland, and G. Duncan.
