Within recent years the passenger service from London to Australia has been considerably improved by the addition of many fast and commodious liners. Unsuitable vessels have gradually been replaced by steamers specially designed for the tiade, with extended facilities for the carriage of cargo. In order to meet the increased demand for passenger trade, the Orient Company decided to build two new steamers, one of which was to replace the Ormuz, which was recently sold. The first new steamer, the Orford, was launched in October, and the Orontes will he ready for delivery in nntmnn next year. The vessels are being constructed by Vickers, Ltd., at Barrow-in-Furness, and will have a speed of twenty knots. The Orient Company formerly owned a liner named the Orontes.
