FORBURY PARK TROTS

TERENCE DILLON'S WIN SUCCESSFUL MEETING CONCLUDED From both the racing and public interest viewpoints, the concluding day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s Summer Meeting on Saturday was a distinct success. But, although the, crowd was huge, there was a distinct shortage of money, yet the totalisator investments showed only a slight decline. The public had a good day, four favorites winning, but the sensational dividend paid by Kate Thorpe held up much money. The racing was, as on the first day, exceedingly interesting. The Metropolitan Handicap, the big event on the card, provided a splendid race. As in the Cup. the held were running close with a lap to go, when Terence Dillon raced round the leading bunch and took the rails running, not being headed from then on. The favorite, Logan Park, retired early in the race. The Otago Cup winner, Engagement, trotted a solid race to win the Crescent Handicap, while the favorite, Brentloc, scored in the . final event. The weather was pleasant. "A light wind tempered the neat, but shortly before the seventh race rain commenced to fall. It was not heavy, though, and affected neither the betting nor the track condition. The track was a little on the dull side.

Throughout the meeting was splendidly managed by the officials, and anything which appeared to be amiss was quickly investigated by the stewards. During the day £36,140 was put through the totalisator, as against £37,8591 on the second day last year. The total investments for the meeting were £62,0151, as compared with £63,2861 for last year’s meeting. NOTES ON THE RAGING

[By St. Clair.] Fine weather, good fields, and a great crowd favored the Forbury Bark Trotting Club on Saturday afternoon when its Summer Meeting was brought to a successful conclusion. A light shower fell before the second last race, but it did little more than lay the dust. After a heavy watering in the morning the course was in first-class order, but a little on the slow side, only the placed horses in four of the races improving on their handicap form. The racing was again interesting, and backers of favorites had a much, better time of it than on the opening day. It is a long time since Otago or, Southland trainers have had such a bad meeting, for excepting the two winners trained by S. Henderson at Oamaru, the other racers were trained in Canterbury or the West Coast. Something of a sensation was caused when the dividend was posted after Kate Thorpe won the saddle race, the second on the, programme, and as there were considerably less than 100 investtors on her chance the bulk of a very large pool was locked up for the remainder of the day. This, and theshower which fell prior to the seventh race, no doubt seriously affected the totalisator turnover, which showed a drop of £1,710| for the day and £1,271

for the in*aling, ns compared with hist year’s Summer Meeting. The figures for the past three meetings are: —

Total ... £71,057 £63,286* £62,015*

The management of the meeting was good and reflected credit ppou Mr UCaffin and his capable staff, and, with increased gate and nomination'and acceptance fees, and a reduction in stake money, the club should be able to show a good surplus on the meeting. Mr Dunne’s starting was better than on the first day, and he got his fields away well up to time. * ¥ » * All started in the Waverley Handicap, for unhoppled trotters, and All Peters, who was made favorite on the opening day in the same class of race, was sent out nearly three times as well backed in this race, carrying much more than Peter Fashion, who was slightly better backed than Wattle Patch and Arctotis, with Deceitful and Jade next in demand. Audalie led Brent Boy, All Peters, and Oval for three furlongs, then All Peters ran into" third place, and before going another furlong had run into second place. Audalie was inclined to skip, and before entering tho last lap the favorite bad taken charge. He was four lengths clear of Audalie and Quickfire, with Wattle Patch next, turning into the straight, and stayed on to win by a bare length from Audalie, who broke sUyds from tho post, ami Quickfire, who galloped over the last few yards, the judge being unable to separate them, • Wattle Patch, Peter Boy, and Hawkesbury Pride were next. Peter Fashion broke early in tho race and lost his chance. The stewards inquired into Quickfire galloping past the post, and accepted his driver’s explanation. Investments, £2,735*.

In the Telegraph Handicap Lucky Dillon and Firpo were withdrawn, and Ayr was sent out a very hot favorite, being nearly twice as well backed as the bracketed pair, Pointalena and Omaha, which were second favorites, and High Jinks and Desert Star were next in demand. Sahib was the first to show out, but after going a couple of furlongs Kate Thorpe ran past him and led into the back stretch from Pointalena. Kate Thorpe drew well clear going along the back, whore Fashion Queen ran into second place. Kate Thorpe landed into the straight four lengths clear from Fashion Queen, Pointalena, with Desert Star at the head of a bunch. Kate Thorpe stayed on to beat Fashion Queen by a length and a-lialf. Pointalena was two lengths off third, a head in front of Desert Star, with Sean M'Elwyn and Sahib next. The favorite got away well enough, but was not able to foot it with the leaders. Kate Thorpe, who won at the Methven meeting last. October, was tho extreme outsider of the field. Investments, £3,774.

All started in the Gore Handicap, for unhoppled trotters, and in a good betting race Sen. Queen was sent out better backed than Len Wood and Sarsaparilla, with Swiftbine and Fanlight the best backed of the others. Pieter Timmerman led Fairlight, Avalanche, Len Wood, and Sarsaparilla passing the stand; then Avalanche ran to the front and showed the way to Pieter Timmerman, but at the end of six furlongs Len Wood ran into second place, and was followed by Pieter Timmerman, Fairlight, and Sea Queen. Before reaching the beginning of the last lap Sea Queen moved up into second place to Avalanche, with Pieter Timmerman, Len Wood, and Sarsaparilla next. The favorite headed Avalanche going along the back, where Sarsaparilla improved his position, and, heading Pieter Timmerman going across the top, followed Sea Queen into the straight. He gradually overhauled Sea Queen, and heat her to the post by a neck. Pieter Timmerman was six lengths further bark third, a head in front of Fairlight; Ran-' dolph (who broke badly at the end of six furlongs) and Avalanche next. Investments, J23.307J.

All started in the Metropolitan Handicap, in which the betting was very keen between Logan Park, who was better backed than the Oamaru bracket, Terence Dillon _ and Dalnahine, with Machine Gun with a little loss on his chance, Bonny Logan being tho only other_ starter heavily backed. The favorite was tho only one not to go away with the held, and practically took no part in the race. Golden Devon. Downcast, and Harry Audubon were responsible_for the early pace, and at the end of half a. mile were showing the way to Event, St. Maura, and Terence Dillon, the field being well strung out. At the end of a mile there was no change in the above order, Machine Gun and Dalnahine being at tho last of tho field. Racing past the .stand the last time Terence Dillon, who turned into the straight in third place, raced to the front, and led Golden Devon and Downcast along the back. Going across the top Terence Dillon was three 'lengths clear of St. Maura and Bonny Logan, with Machine Gun closing. In the run to the post St. Maura tangled opposite tho lawn stand, and Terence Dillon stayed on to win easing up by two lengths from Bonny Logan, with Machine Gun a .similar distance off third. Logan Chief, Dalnahine, and Downcast were next. Investments, £5,747}.

Great Form was withdrawn from the Stewards’ Handicap, for which Dundas Boy carried considerably more than Firebrand and Nelson M'Elwyn, who were the best backed of the others. Malice led Cardinal and Blue, .Royal Authoress, and Dundas Boy. Excepting that Cardinal and Blue took up the running and Malice dropped out, and there was no change in the order of the lenders until two and a-half furlongs from home, where both Royal Authoress and tho favorite ran past Cardinal and Blue. Royal Authoress, on the rails, had the advantage at tho homo turn, but opposite the outside totalisator the favorite drew out to win easily by five lengths from Royal Authoress. Cardinal and Blue was eased up to finish seven lengths further back third, just in front of Athalone, Kibiringi and Nelson M'Elwyn next. Investments, £4,657.

All blurted in the Crescent Handicap for uphoppled trotters, and Cannonball was made a good favorite, with Engagement and El/.ear each well backed, with John Mauritius the best supported of the others. Cannonball-and ELcar each lost their chances at the start, from which Duke Bingen led out, with Our Lady, Clonmel, and Pctrolcnse next. After covering six furlongs in this order Our Lady broke badly, and Duke Bingen went on from Clonmel, Blue Thorpe, Little Logan, Petroieuse, and Engagement, with the favorite at the tail of the Held. There was no change in the next round, and with three furlongs to go Duke Bingen was still in front, with Clonmel and Blue Thorpe next, and Engagement, Petroieuse, and John Mauritius closing up. The latter two collided two and a-half furlongs from. home. Engagement ran into third place rounding the turn into the straight, and, cutting down Clonmel, caught the dying Duke Bingen in the last few strides, and beat him by a neck. Cannonball was six lengths away third, and Little Logan, Bine Thorpe, and Trampfast were next. Investments, £4,660|. * * * V Just before the start of the Royal Handicap a light shower fell, which continued through the running of the race. Daphne de Oro was made a good favorite, with Tennessee’s Child and Searchlight easily the best backed of the others, and La Sonnette and Hector’s Own nest fancied. Liberal again

stood on the mark and took no part iu the race. Searchlight Lad at once took charge and Jed Transport, Okoura,, ami Four Bells over half a mile, then Four Bells ran into second place, and entering the straight prior to the last lap the field closed up, and as they turned into the straight Searchlight Lad was still in charge, with Daphne de Oro, Trampfast, Four Bells, and La Sonuette next. Going to the far turn Searchlight Lad and Daphne de Oro drew away from the others, ami the former, on the rails, had the advantage. Over 100yds from the post tlio favorite got her nose in front, and Searchlight Lad broke, leaving the filly to run home a good winner by four lengths from La Sonnette, who beat Diamond Child by two lengths for second, money. Four Bells, Lucky Dillon, Transport, and Okoura were close up next. Investments, £5,193*. * * * ■* All started in the Au Devoir Handicap, and Brentloc was sent out better backed than Concliff, who in turn was much better backed than the bracketed pair (Desert Star and Downcast), with William the Great and Bob Logan next in demand. Acre and Nantwich were slow to get away, and Jean M‘Elwyn led out- from Desert Star and William tho Great, and at the turn into the straight Brentloc had run into fourth place. Passing the stand (at the end of three furlongs), Brentloc joined Jean M'Elwyn, and Desert Star and William the Great were close up, Concliff being at the tail of the field. Brentloc drew out from Jean M'Elwyn, Desert Star, and Donside going along the back and led into the run home from Jean M'Elwyn, who was at the head of a bunched field, Concliff moving up fast on the outside. Brentloc stayed on to win by two lengths from Concliff, who finished with a great burst of speed and beat Jean M'Elwyn and William the Great (who also finished in line) by a head. Desert Star and Donside were next. Harold Burwood broke badly at the end of half a mile. Investments, £6.057.

THREE MOUTHS’ SUSPENSION

FREE HOLMES BEFORE STEWARDS.

The prominent Upper Riccarton trainer and driver, Free Holmes, was disqualified for three months by the Judicial Committee of the Trotting Club for interference with Cardinal and Blue in the Stewards’ Handicap, the fifth race. r The patrol steward (Mr R. M. Greenslado), who was stationed at tbo far corner (2if from home), reported to the committee that Free Holmes, the driver of Royal Authoress, had cut across Cardinal and Blue just alter turning the bend in the final lap. Evidence at the inquiry was given by Mr Greenslnde, S, Todd (the driver of Cardinal and Bine), and R. B. Berry (the driver of Dundas Boy, who was running close to Royal Authoress at the time), and Free Holmes. The inquiry was a. lengthy one, and was concluded some time after the last race, when the committee decided to disqualify Holmes for three months, and to caution Berry severely for giving unsatisfactory evidence.

Holmes has lodged an appeal against his disqualification. Dundas Boy won the race, with Royal Authoress second and Cardinal and Bine third. The placings were not altered.
