THE PRINCESS THEATRE.

TO TOE EDITOR, Sir, —Bay I express the hope that when the above is remodelled a special effort will be made to preserve intact the splendid elliptical staircase which <■ -aces thg front main entrance? This is quite the best of its kind in New Zealand. The executors, the late Mr Julius Alberti and the late Mr W. Brough, were craftsmen of exceptional ability, and men whose first consideration was to produce work which defied criticism. Indeed, even to-day the only fault to be noticed k due to the native timber used. Rimu, unless specially treated, is apt to shrink and warp more than walnut br mahogany, and a joint or so may have opened. Quito a number of fine stairs have been sacrificed within the last decade, and hideous ones erected in their places. If the proprietors and the arcihtect can avoid dismantling this work of art', they will merit the thanks of those whose joy in life is the creation and preservation of beautiful things.—l am, etc'., J.
