In the court yesterday _a defended case was commenced in which a young farmer Aiamed Francis John Douglas, of Hawke’s Bay, denied being intoxicated in charge of a motor car, and also pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving and to having used indecent language in Willis street. The police evidence was that the defendant passed a stationary tramcar. Later the motor was stopped by the, traffic inspector, who asked the defendant for his license. The latter refused to produce it, and used indecent language. Eventually, however, he showed the license. He was encuoraged by others to defy the inspector, He was arrested and taken to the police station, where he was seen by doctors. Dr Park said that from the appearance of the defendant he had been drinking fairly bpavily on Saturday, but when seen at 1.15 a.m. on Sunday he was practically sober. Witness, however,.did not think ho was fit to drive even at the time of examination. After a lengthy hearing and further evidence to-day, Mr Page, S.M., fined Douglas £25, and prohibited him from driving for twelve months.
