REGULATION OF THE AREA Dealing with the subject of the reclamation of Mussel Bay, the animal report of the Harbor Board states:— “As the reclamation of any area is dependent on the quantity of dredgings available in the immediate locality, and as, with ho increase in tonnage, a constant demand is made on the services of Dredge 222 lor urgent work in the harbor, particularly in the steamers’ basin, Dunedin, it was decided that, on completion of the necessary dredging in Hamilton .Bay, the Vulcan ho transferred to Dunedin to finish Bogan Bark and the Leith Estuary. Dredge 222 is to obtain the spoil from the steamers’ basin and Ihc'Victoria Channel. “Tire pipe line and the electric power lino at Mussel Bay will remain intact ready for coupling up again should urgent dredging work he required at any future date in the lower harbor. “In November, 1921, a conference was held with representatives of the Port Chalmers Borough Council, when the question of the actual price the council would require to pay (in accordance with the understanding with the council’s delegates in Wellington in 1908, on the occasion of the ‘ Merger Act being before the Local Bills Committee and the Legislature) for the depositing—not dredging cost—of spoil in the 4-J aero area (approximate) was discussed. “ The price had been loft in abeyance, and on October 29, 1926, it was decided that the council’s area he reclaimed on its agreeing to pay 6d per yard, the estimated quantity being 95,00(1 yards. On November 2 the council were notified accordingly, and replied on the 9th idem that the matter had been referred to a special committee to bring down a report in connection therewith. _ We are still awaiting the council’s reply to our communication. The dredge Vulcan was shifted to Dunedin on December 13.”
