FATAL TREASURE HUNT

Two workmen of Canosa, m Apinla, Italy, have perished in a strange advttuure while treasure seeking in the subterranean caves of \etrina, an enterprise in which some twenty others from ihe vicinity of Canosa are ongu^od. During the war a young soldier from Canosa was sent to the island of Asinara, where he met among some convicts a former brigand, over eighty years of age. who. before he died assured the soldier that he had known since his young days a certain care near Vetriua where huge treasures amassed by a long succession of brigands, had accumulated. He drew a map of the cave, and when the soldier, whose name was Manoini, returned after the war he started on a search. The voting man named Nunno also had similar information, and for four years the.v worked every night, following the map left by the old brigand in trying to penetrate into the cave. In time they were joined by many others, who formed a company of some twenty men, and some time ago they discovered all the traces indicated on the old man’s paper. They seemed to be approaching the deep passage of the cave where the treasure was supposed to be; but Nunno, one of the leading searchers was overcome by poisonous gases and died. His body was not recovered until some weeks later. Mancini also tried to approach the supposed hiding place of the treasure, but also died from asphyxiation. The people of Canosa are now more convinced than ever of the existence of a huge treasure in the cave, as they were known to have been the haunts of the once notorious brigands Dojatello, Nino Nango, Peppe, Caruso, and Nicola Morra.
