NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
LAST BAY The New Zealand national swimming championships were continued this mofning, when Wellington and Auckland met in the first match of the last round of the'water polo competition, a close game, marred by too much talk and horseplay, resulting in a draw, each side scoring three goals. The teams were fairly evenly matched, though Wellington were the better throwers. Goals for Wellington were scored by Murrell (2) and W. Cameron, and for Auckland by Farrell (2) and Enwright. The teams were: Wellington • F. Ryan, C. Claridge, J. Cameron, W. Cameron, D. Murrell, H. Dickson, and R, Pelham. Auckland Hedges, J. Enwright, J Meikle, J. P. Farrell, N K. Sylow, L. Fairgray, and Kenny. Heats *in the 440yds men’s national championship were to have been swum this morning, but owing to the withdrawal of D. Murrell, the race will now be contested outright THE CONCLUDING PROGRAMME. The championships will be brought to a conclusion to-night, when a splendid programme will be staged. One of the star attractions will be the 440yds ladies’ national championship, in which Miss K. Miller will defend her title. The 440yds men’s national championship will be decided also, while in the 220yds ladies’ national breast stroke championship it is quite likely that the holder of the title, Miss Gladys Pidgeou, will go very near to her own record. The 500yds flying squadron race will be staged to-night, and Otago will meet Auckland at water polo. The 100yds intermediate boys’ breast stroke championship will be swum, while the ladies’ and men’s diving championships will also be staged.
