The final Plunkct Shield match commenced this morning in fine, but windy, weather on a hard wicket. Wellington won the toss, and batted, Worker and Dempster opening the innings to the bowling of Matheson and Player. The batsmen proceeded cautiously against accurate bowling. _ Worker square-cut Matheson to the fence, and 20 appeared after twenty-six minutes. At 22 Anthony replaced player, and Dempster hooked him for 4. _ Player came on at the other end with the wind. The batting brightened up, and Dempster ran into the 20’s. Matheson tried his luck against the wind, but the first ball Dempster played through the slips for 3. Worker played the same stroke, also for 3. At 48 Anthonv replaced Player (none for 10 off nine overs). Fifty was registered after fifty-nine minutes _ play At fifty-seven G. Weir went on instead or Matheson (none for 31). Dempster was now going well and exploiting a well-timed hook .stroke. Dacre took the ball from Weir after one over, and Dempster drove him for 4. Woir was put on with the iwnd m piace of Anthony. Dempster reached 50 after seventythree minutes at the crease. Dacro was changing Ins bowler licouentlv, ami brought Anthony on against the / wind. Dempster hooked him twice for 4. Badcock played a couple of lucky ones off Player through the slips This bowler was keeping a fine length and getting pace off the wicket. The batsmen played quietly, although Lowry occasionally opened out to Anthony. At 136 Bowley replaced Player, who had sent down 15 overs for 31 runs. Dacre took the ball from Anthony (two for 51). Badcock hooked Bowley for 4 and two balls later played him through the slips to the boundary.
