SOCIAL AND PRESENTATION

Tho residents of Taieri Mouth assembled in large numbers in the local ball on Monday evening last to do honor to Mr Samuel E. Green and to_ make him a presentation on the occasion ol Iris ninetieth birthday. Several visitors were also present irom town, Mr W. R. Briigh The first part of tho evening was taken up with a progressive ouchrc tournament, the prizes being won by Miss A. Falkland and Mr G. M'lntosb, the booby prizes going to Miss C. Scudamore and Mr George Green. , , Mr W. K. Brngh, on behalf of many friends, presented the guest of the evening with an arm chair and Mosgiel rug. , , . Mr John Joseph added Ins congratulations to Mr Green, and spoke ol the good feeling that had always existed between Mr Green and the other incidents of the district. Mr F. J. Priest, as one ot the earliest visitors to Taier: Mouth, said it gave him much pleasure to have tho opportunity of being present at _ the celebration of the ninetieth anniversary of the birthday of his old and esteemed friend, Mr Green. Mr Priest referred to the hospitality to visitors by the residents ol laieu Beach as far back as 18S7 ; and mentioned several of the old pioneers who did such good work lor the district in the early 1 days. Such men as Samuel Green, Antonio Joseph, John Kinaston, Archie and the Misses Livingstone, Wm. Jeffreys, M'Cuddon, Dugald Campbell, Mrs Campbell, Ned Palmer (the old pnntnian), and others. The Rev. Mr Harkness also spoke of the good qualities ol Mr Green, ana gave some interesting reminiscences of the early days. Mr H. W. Allan then presented Mr Green with an ebony walking _ stick from a few of Mr Green’s town friends, and expressed the wish that he would be spared some years yet to use it. During the evening songs were given by Mrs Gladding and Miss Rena Marshall, two recitations by Master Graham Botting, and a humorous story by Mr H. Wren. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies, after which the floor was cleared and the young people continued dancing until well after midnight. At an interval Mr Green made suitable acknowledgment of the honor accorded him.
