ELECTRIC FIRES

FOR HOME HEATING POPULARITY INCREASING Electricity has been aptly termed “ Man’s tireless servant.’’ There seems to be no end to the jobs it can do, and for every season of the year it has something to offer which is just a little better than anything else. Next to lighting, probably no method using electricity is so universally adopted as electric heating, particularly in the home. Because electricity gave a comparatively cool light, tho idea of using it for heating remained for a long time unfamiliar to many, and it is only just in recent years that the electric radiator has .attained its immense popularity, Tho bane of the coal fire, the smoke, the dirt, the cleaning Up and laying of the fires, and the constant carrying of fuel, has been the burden of the housewife’s complaint from time im- : memorial. Yet she has to put up with all this labor because a fire she must have, and there was no bettor means of obtaining. one. Progress has now made one more step forward—one more to lighten woman’s burden in the homo. In the electric_ fire, all that is best and attractive in the hearth—the fireside around which we may experience the pleasant, radiant glow so ngreeable to watch—the clear ruddy essence of flame that warms and comforts—is still with us—yet all without the dirt and labor inseparable from coal fires. It is indeed a modern miracle, and most difficult to comprehend that the swift waters of Waipori ridge are capable of creating the warm healthful glow which radiates from the electric fire in so many Dunedin homes. One wonders whether wo _ appreciate our electrical advantages quite enough, or make as much of them as we might do. There is, however, every indication that electrical home-heating is going to attain tremendous popularity during the coming winter. If the law of averages is any guide, tho winter may be a severe one, with wet conditions above the average, and every effort will need to bo made to keep homes healthily dry. Bedrooms will need constant airing; in fact, every part of tho house wall need some application of warjnth to keep it sweet and wholesome; and, for this reason, tho electric radiator is going to he used to a greater extent than ever before.
